At other times, the most unlikely solutions come from the most surprising places. One irritated traveler learned this himself after artificial intelligence proved to be his secret ally in fighting strict cancellation policies and saving him thousands of dollars. The experience started with a man having to cancel his scheduled vacation to Medellín, Colombia, because of a sudden medical condition.

What would have otherwise been a vacation escapade soon turned into a money-making nightmare when his airline and hotel indicated that they would not be refunding his money, and he was left with the possible loss of $2,500.

“The hotel did not have a cancellation policy. They simply flat-out said no to us,” he described in a lengthy Reddit entry which has since spread far and wide. The airline was similarly unhelpful, with officials explaining to them there was “no cancellation policy” that could assist his situation.

ChatGPT’s Legal Prowess: A Tourist’s ₹2 Lakh Refund Triumph

Confronted with a loss of close to ₹2 lakh, the tourist took a different tack. Instead of throwing in the towel or opting for pricey legal representation, he requested the assistance of ChatGPT. His strategy was quite ingenious, as he requested that the AI pretend to be his attorney and make his argument.

The secret to his success was offering the appropriate information. The traveler revealed that he had been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and had acquired a doctor’s note verifying his condition.

With this medical proof in hand, he told ChatGPT to create a strong case for a refund on medical grounds.

What happened next impressed even the traveler himself. “ChatGPT researched Expedia policies, the hotel’s policies, and the airline policies. It then wrote a letter for me advocating,” he shared. 

The AI didn’t just write a generic complaint letter – it thoroughly analyzed the relevant policies and crafted targeted arguments.

The first victory came relatively quickly. The hotel, perhaps swayed by the professional tone and legal reasoning in the AI-generated letter, reversed its position and granted him a refund. However, the airline proved more stubborn, responding that “a refund is only possible due to death or terminal illness.”

AI-Powered Persistence Pays Off: Traveler’s Refund Triumph

Rather than giving up, the determined traveler fed this rejection back to ChatGPT and asked for another approach. The AI rose to the challenge, crafting a second letter that specifically addressed the airline’s response and highlighted the discrimination inherent in dismissing mental health conditions.

“It described reasons why and how my medical condition can affect the flight, and that they were being biased based on a mental illness. This thing wrote this letter to the core,” the traveler marveled. The second letter apparently struck the right chord, focusing on policy language and the legal implications of treating mental health differently from physical ailments.

The persistence paid off dramatically. Just one hour after sending the AI-crafted response, the airline completely changed its position. “The airline responded that my refund will be honored,” he reported triumphantly.

The financial impact was significant, but the traveler was equally impressed by the cost-effectiveness of his solution. “Had I not used ChatGPT, I would have had to hire a paralegal. And that would’ve cost me more money,” he noted. Traditional legal assistance could have easily cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, making the AI approach both more accessible and more affordable.

His success story has resonated with many people who have faced similar frustrations with inflexible cancellation policies. The key takeaway from his experience goes beyond just using AI tools; it’s about persistence, proper documentation, and knowing how to present a case effectively.

The traveler’s advice to others facing similar situations is simple but powerful: “Don’t take no for an answer.” His experience demonstrates that with the right approach, even the most rigid policies can sometimes be challenged successfully.

While not every situation will have the same positive outcome, this story highlights how modern AI tools can level the playing field for ordinary consumers dealing with large corporations and complex policies.
