China Plans Ban on Retractable Car Door Handles After Safety Fears

China is preparing to ban retractable and fully electronic car door handles starting January 1, 2027, following growing concern that these designs can trap passengers inside vehicles during emergencies.

The proposal appears in a draft regulation released on December 16 by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. At its core, the message is simple: if a car loses power or crashes, people must still be able to get out, and rescuers must be able to get in.

Mechanical Opening Becomes Mandatory

Under the proposed rules, passenger vehicles weighing less than 3.5 tons must have both interior and exterior door handles that work mechanically, even when electricity fails. That means no more doors that rely entirely on motors, buttons, or hidden electronic releases.

The draft also sets requirements for how door handles should release, how they behave during power loss, where they are placed, and how clearly they are marked. These rules are part of a larger set of seven new automotive safety standards China is currently reviewing.

When Design Turns Into a Risk

Retractable door handles became popular as electric vehicles took off. Automakers promoted them as sleek, modern, and better for aerodynamics. But over time, real-world use exposed serious problems.

Consumer complaints rose sharply in 2024. Parents reported children getting fingers pinched. Drivers complained that the handles froze in winter. Others said doors wouldn’t open after accidents or when the battery failed, according to the China Consumers Association.

What was once marketed as innovation started to feel like a liability.

Fatal Accidents Shift Public Opinion

The issue gained national attention after a fatal crash in Chengdu on October 13. Reports suggested rescuers were unable to open the vehicle’s doors in time. A similar crash in Tongling later killed three people.

Media reports linked both incidents to the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. An anonymous source told Shanghai-based outlet The Paper that the car lacks a mechanical exterior door handle. While an internal manual release exists, it is hidden and difficult to reach.

According to the source, even after breaking the window, rescuers could not easily access the release mechanism.

Not Just a China Problem

Concerns over electronic door handles are spreading globally. In September, US safety regulators opened an investigation into Tesla’s Model Y after reports that door handle failures may have delayed emergency rescues in fatal crashes.

Automotive executives are also questioning the trend. Wei Jianjun, chairman of Great Wall Motors, recently criticized concealed door handles, saying they serve styling more than safety and offer little real benefit in efficiency or power savings.

Public Reaction Backs the Move

Online reaction in China has been largely positive. Many users say the regulation is overdue and argue that basic safety should never be sacrificed for design trends.

If approved, the China retractable handle ban could reshape vehicle design well beyond its borders. For automakers, the signal is clear: futuristic looks matter less than making sure people can get out alive when things go wrong.
