China’s tech giant Baidu is gearing up to launch its next-generation large language model in the third quarter of 2025. Sources revealed that the upcoming model would feature advanced multimodal capabilities, enhancing its ability to process images, audio, and text. China’s Baidu will release next-generation AI model this year, aiming to enhance its competitiveness in the AI industry. This update aims to compete with other Chinese and U.S. AI models that have overshadowed Baidu’s earlier offerings.

Baidu’s announcement follows a major disruption by DeepSeek, a Chinese startup that recently launched an open-source language model. DeepSeek gained popularity for its superior reasoning abilities and cost-effective deployment, challenging OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The startup’s success caused a global tech stock sell-off and proved China’s capability to compete internationally with domestically developed AI technology.

Following DeepSeek’s launch, Baidu pledged support by running the model on its own computing chips. Other Chinese tech leaders, including Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, Lenovo, and Geely, also integrated DeepSeek into their cloud platforms and products. This collective backing highlights the growing influence of Chinese firms in the global AI landscape.

Baidu CEO Highlights Cost Efficiency

At the World Governments Summit in Dubai, Baidu CEO Robin Li emphasized that foundational AI models could reduce interference costs by over 90% in the coming year. He predicted that lowering deployment expenses would significantly boost productivity. Despite the cost advantages of DeepSeek, Li stressed the ongoing need for investment in data centers and cloud infrastructure.

Baidu’s Wenku platform, known for its AI-powered presentation and document creation, saw a 60% rise in users, reaching over 40 million by the end of 2024. The success of Wenku demonstrates Baidu’s potential to generate revenue through practical AI applications, even as it faces stiff competition in other areas.

According to reports, China’s Baidu will release next-generation AI model this year with advanced multimodal capabilities. Baidu’s upcoming AI model, Ernie 5.0, is expected to bring significant advancements in multimodal capabilities. This technology will allow the model to process text, images, audio, and video simultaneously, offering more interactive user experiences. The update is a strategic move to regain leadership in the competitive AI market.

DeepSeek’s Impact on Global Tech Markets

DeepSeek’s entry into the market not only challenged Baidu but also triggered global tech stock fluctuations. A Bernstein analyst noted that DeepSeek’s launch defied U.S. sanctions by showcasing China’s ability to innovate with homegrown AI technology. The development marked a turning point in the global AI race, influencing international market dynamics. Analysts predict that China’s Baidu will release next-generation AI model this year to challenge rivals like DeepSeek and OpenAI.

Chinese companies are rapidly closing the gap with U.S. tech giants in AI development. While OpenAI and Google lead in the West, firms like Baidu and DeepSeek are pushing the boundaries in China. This competition is reshaping the global AI landscape, with geopolitical factors influencing regional AI strategies.

Baidu’s Strategy to Regain Market Share

Baidu is focusing on reducing operational costs to stay competitive. CEO Robin Li noted that a 90% reduction in AI model interference costs would enhance productivity and drive innovation. This cost-efficiency strategy is crucial for Baidu as it navigates a market reshaped by DeepSeek’s disruptive technology.

Baidu’s journey from an AI pioneer to a market challenger underscores the rapidly evolving tech landscape. As it prepares to launch Ernie 5.0, the company faces stiff competition from agile startups and established rivals. Its success will depend on continuous innovation, strategic cost management, and effective scaling of AI applications globally.
