The auto world wasted no time hitting the accelerator in 2026. From EVs rolling off U.S. assembly lines to robotaxis quietly racking up test miles, day two of the year already feels busy, ambitious, and a little disruptive. Let’s break down what matters.

From Gas to Glassless: A Week Behind the Wheel

The year begins with a garage swap. The rugged Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter exits, making room for the sleek Polestar 4. The immediate talking point isn’t range or acceleration. It’s visibility.

Polestar’s decision to ditch a traditional rear window in favor of a camera-based feed raises a simple question: Should a mass-market car feel this experimental? It’s early days, but the choice highlights a broader industry trend: EV makers are increasingly willing to challenge long-held automotive norms.

China’s Automotive Giants Eye the U.S.

At CES in Las Vegas, Ash Sutcliffe of Geely Holding Group offered a rare, candid glimpse into future plans. The message was clear: the U.S. is very much on the radar.

Geely’s strength lies in its portfolio, which includes Volvo, Lotus, Polestar, Zeekr, and Lynk & Co. Crucially, Volvo’s existing U.S. manufacturing footprint could offer a clean workaround to trade and tariff barriers. If Geely moves, it won’t tiptoe.

Robotaxis Move From Concept to Concrete

Autonomous mobility took a tangible step forward as Uber, Lucid, and Nuro revealed a production-intent robotaxi based on Lucid’s Gravity SUV.

These vehicles are already testing on San Francisco streets, with plans to deploy more than 20,000 units over five years. This isn’t a flashy demo. Its infrastructure is being built quietly, mile by mile.

Afeela Becomes Real, Not Just Talk

Sony and Honda’s joint EV brand crossed a major milestone as the first Afeela rolled off the line at Honda East Liberty Auto Plant. Alongside that, a crossover SUV concept debuted at CES.

This matters because Afeela has officially moved from vision deck to physical product. The execution phase has begun.

Trademarks and Tech: Tesla and Mercedes-Benz

Not all news was about launches. Tesla received a suspension notice from the United States Patent and Trademark Office over the “Cybercab” name, an early reminder that branding can be as complex as battery chemistry.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz announced MB. Drive Assist Pro, a hands-free Level 2 system slated for U.S. launch later this year. City navigation without constant driver input is inching closer to everyday reality.

The Big Picture

What this really means is simple: 2026 isn’t warming up. It’s already moving. EVs are scaling, autonomy is maturing, and global players are redrawing maps. The year’s tone is set, and it’s confident, fast, and quietly transformative.
