Croatia’s Football Team Becomes World’s First to Reward Fans with Crypto

The Croatian national football team, affectionately known as the “Vatreni” or “The Blazers,” has made history, and this time it is not on the pitch. On Tuesday, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) announced that it has become the first national team in the world to present a crypto-based fan rewards program, a ground-breaking effort to change the way fans interact with their favourite club.

In partnership with blockchain platform, Kadena, the HNS is adding a completely unique crypto token, VATRENI, within its official mobile app. This forward-looking announcement opens layered future of fan engagement and highlights the excitement of international football alongside new technology available through Web3.

How it Works: Earning and Spending ‘VATRENI’

This is a new system that is meant to be seamlessly built into the fan experience. Supporters who buy merchandise through the official HNS app will receive back 1% of their purchase value, in the form of VATRENI tokens.

VATRENI are more than a digital memento; holding VATRENI represents access to a new tier of valuable perks and exclusive benefits. The federation has clarified that the perks could include experiences like VIP perks, limited or unique merchandise, and additional benefits not available to the general public—essentially all the things you would expect from a federation brand of this type. In the longer-term future, HNS is looking to have these tokens allow fans to redeem match tickets, allowing for more tangible perks and real value for die-hard supporters.

A Strategic Tech Upgrade to the Kadena Blockchain

While the concept of a Croatian fan token is not new (it was previously identified in 2023 on Polygon), this week’s announcement represents a significant technological leap. The HNS are departing from the VATRENI token and migrating to the Kadena blockchain as part of a larger strategy to create a more fully integrated and collective digital ecosystem for its fans in advance of World Cup 2026.

The Big Picture: Unifying the Fan Experience

Experts argue that this is addressing a problem major sports organizations have faced for quite some time, which is connected to the dizzying array of separate experiences and systems that fans must navigate—for example, separate systems for buying tickets, shopping for merchandise, or utilizing a fan club.

Joel Woodman, Head of Partnerships at Kadena, elaborated that this is really the defining characteristic of a blockchain solution. By being able to use a single token like VATRENI, many different features can be intermeshed into one cohesive system. The token establishes a digital key, allowing for a fan’s loyalty and engagement to be measured and rewarded in a single app across the entire ecosystem, developing a much deeper and more collaborative connection.

A New Playbook for Engagement Ahead of the World Cup

The timing couldn’t be better, as this is the year going into the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Croatian Football Federation is strategically developing an international digital community. The tokenized rewards program is an inventive approach to engage the international audience, along with building a stronger sense of belonging and connectedness with the team. This is a new approach for national teams to use technology to develop and sustain a global following of engaged fans.

Modest Beginnings, Major Potential

Although the VATRENI token is available for trading on exchanges like Binance, trading activity is limited. On October 7, the token’s volume in trades over the past 24 hours was roughly $17,000, and its market capitalization was about $4.8 million. Nevertheless, the immediate financial value of the token is not the most significant aspect. The real advance is using the token as a medium of fan engagement. In other words, the Croatian Football Federation isn’t simply launching a new cryptocurrency; they’re launching a new way to be a fan. While Croatia may be the inaugural national team to take this step, they certainly won’t be the last.
