A Resignation That Shakes the Foundation
Suvonil Chatterjee, Ola Electric’s Chief Technology and Product Officer, has officially resigned, leaving a noticeable void in the leadership team of India’s largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer. Chatterjee, who stepped down on November 30, 2024, had been one of the company’s most influential figures, second only to founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal. This latest departure has intensified concerns over the company’s management stability as it navigates operational expansions and struggles with slumping sales.
When Chatterjee joined the Ola Group in September 2017 as Head of Design, his adventure officially began. He was elevated to Chief Product Officer in 2021 and then to the combined position of Chief Technology and Product Officer in 2022 as a result of his vision and experience. His departure was a huge loss for Ola because his leadership was instrumental in defining the company’s vision for electric transportation.
A Trend of High-Level Exits
Over the years, Ola Electric has experienced a string of high-profile resignations, Chatterjee’s exit being the most recent. Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Ankit Bhati’s resignation in 2019 marked the beginning of the wave of departures and set the stage for what seems to be an ongoing leadership issue. The problem has gotten worse in recent months, and several senior executives have left the organization.
Sources report that in just the past two months, at least 500 employees, each earning over Rs 50 lakh per annum, have resigned. The exodus is not limited to individuals; entire teams involved in critical areas such as engineering program management, product planning, and customer quality assurance have been laid off or have voluntarily exited the organization.
A Leadership Vacuum
Ola Electric’s leadership crisis extends beyond Chatterjee’s departure. The company currently operates without a Chief People Officer following the exit of N Balachandar, and it lacks a company secretary. Additionally, key roles such as the head of product strategy and the head of service have also been vacated. The head of sourcing is reportedly serving their notice period, while the vice president of production has been placed on garden leave.
This leadership void raises questions about the company’s ability to manage ongoing projects and address the operational challenges posed by its ambitious expansion plans.
Operational Challenges Amid Growth Ambitions
Ola Electric has been aggressively pursuing growth, including the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities and product lineup. However, these ambitions are being undermined by internal turbulence. Reports of mass layoffs and an exodus of skilled personnel indicate a troubling disconnect between the company’s aspirations and its organizational stability.
The loss of experienced teams in areas like customer quality assurance and product planning could impact the company’s ability to maintain high standards in product development and customer service. This, in turn, risks eroding consumer trust at a time when the electric two-wheeler market in India is becoming increasingly competitive.
Bhavish Aggarwal’s Growing Challenges
Bhavish Aggarwal, the spokesperson for Ola Electric, is currently under increasing pressure to bring the company back on track and stabilize it. A dependable lieutenant like Chatterjee’s leaving is devastating, especially considering how crucial a role he played in establishing the company’s technical and product strategy. Aggarwal’s capacity to draw in and hold on to elite personnel will be crucial in defining Ola Electric’s future course.
The company’s recent achievements, such as its initial public offering (IPO) debut and its aspirational intentions to diversify its product line, are also clouded by the leadership issue. The stakes are bigger than ever because investors and stakeholders will probably be closely examining Aggarwal’s response to these difficulties.

Although Ola Electric can overcome its obstacles, doing so will call for swift action and a well-thought-out plan. Filling important leadership positions with seasoned experts who can provide stability and direction must be the company’s top priority. Rebuilding employee trust is also necessary to make sure that workers feel appreciated and inspired to contribute to the company’s success.
