In this digital age, battlefields have undergone an unimagined transformation. As the digital era is advancing, everything is getting digital, even the battlefield. Therefore, bypassing the physical battles, complex digital confrontations are the new trend, where nations engage in complex digital conflict. This cyber warfare is mostly state-sponsored cyberattacks that are generated to disrupt critical infrastructure, steal sensitive data, and destabilize governments. The most troublesome part is that, with every passing day, this is becoming a growing concern in global security.

Escalation of Cyber Threats

The cyber warfare system has evolved alarmingly in recent years, with almost every nation, even some bigger states, frequently employing cyber operations as the primary instrument of cyber operations. The most troublesome part is that these cyber offensives often target vital sectors of the nations, including energy, finance, healthcare, and defense. These are the core sectors that are related to a nation’s security, and attacking them will easily hamper national security and public safety.

To get a clearer view of these cyberattacks, let’s take the example of the ransomware attacks that have surged globally and affected various important sectors simultaneously, leading to substantial financial losses and operational disruptions. Most recently, the United States has identified around 5000 ransomware attacks, starting in 2021. The scary part about these attacks is that for these attacks, around $3.1 billion was paid in ransom.

These attacks are not something that randomly happens. They involve a lot of things, including state-sponsored actors collaborating with criminal organizations to enhance the efficacy of their cyber operations. These involvements blur the lines between traditional cybercrime and state-directed cyber warfare. Therefore, these things are getting more complicated with each day.

While cyber-attacks have always been tough to deal with, the advancement of AI and the implementation of artificial intelligence have escalated cyberattacks’ capabilities. With AI involved in these attacks, attackers can automate attacks, increasing their speed and complexity and posing new challenges for cybersecurity defenses. Some recent reports have highlighted that Russia is one of those countries that has been integrating AI into cyberattacks, which has forced countries to link U.K to strengthen their security policies to secure the country’s national security.

National and International Defense Strategies

The threat of cyberattacks is increasing, but it’s not that countries are preparing their defense strategies. From the biggest powers to the tiniest ones, everyone is ready to fight these escalating cyber threats. To fight the cyber threat, nations are adopting comprehensive strategies to detect digital attacks and almost immediately start fighting against it. Countries have already started developing specialized cyber defense units to battle them, providing advanced national cybersecurity policies. Additionally, countries often facing these issues have started strengthening their international collaborations to enhance collective security.

Recent reports have highlighted that a few countries have established dedicated cyber commands within their military structures. This is a major step that has been taken to centralize and strengthen their cyberdefense capabilities. The United States Cyber Command is one of the most potent examples of this.

USCYBERCOM has been elevated to a Unified Combatant Command, reflecting its critical role in national defense. China has taken a similar step and formed the Strategic Support Force that is primarily focusing on integrating cyber warfare into its military operations. National cybersecurity policies are also updated, so they can successfully and effectively address the dynamic nature of cyber threats.

International cooperations are also formed to fight these cyber threats. Almost all countries have agreed that cyber threats are not restricted to certain borders, but they have transcended national borders. Therefore, forming alliances is the best way to stay safe and protect national security. Even NATO has acknowledged that cyberspace is a growing domain of operations. Therefore, collaboration and cooperation are needed to fight against it.

Now that cyberwarfare is becoming integral to global conflict, nations must be cautious about fighting them. Whether they will do that by restricting policies or joining hands with other nations, they have to figure out ways to protect their national security. The fusion of AI has made things complicated, but they are not unsolvable.
