Major online marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart have been targeted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for breaking essential product certification rules in a dramatic move that has rocked the e-commerce industry. BIS has confiscated thousands of non-compliant products that were being distributed without the necessary BIS certification after conducting extensive operations across several locations. The trust of these platforms, which have long been the preferred shopping locations for millions of Indian consumers, has been severely damaged by this.

BIS Raids: A Wake-Up Call for E-Commerce
The Bureau of Indian Standards conducted a number of search and seizure operations in major cities, including Delhi, Lucknow, and Gurugram, on March 7, 2025. The results were concerning: warehouses run by Amazon and Flipkart had hundreds of uncertified toys, hand blenders, aluminum foils, metallic water bottles, and even electronic equipment. Specifically, hundreds of uncertified toys and hand blenders were seized during a raid at an Amazon warehouse in Lucknow, and a similar investigation in Gurugram turned up a number of hazardous items, including food mixers and PVC wires.
The BIS investigations also traced several of these non-compliant products to a common source: Techvision International Pvt Ltd. This company’s warehouses in Delhi were raided, leading to the discovery of thousands of electric water heaters, electric food mixers, and even gas stoves that lacked proper BIS certifications.
The BIS Act: Protecting Consumers and Ensuring Quality
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) was created to establish a national authority to set the standard for goods, services, and systems. Under the BIS Act of 2016, all products sold in India must meet defined quality standards to ensure consumer safety and promote reliability in the marketplace. Section 17 of the BIS Act requires that manufacturers and distributors comply with these regulations, and failure to do so can result in severe legal consequences.
The legal action taken by BIS in this case involves violations of these crucial standards, affecting products that are integral to the daily lives of consumers. With the rise in online shopping, it’s vital that digital marketplaces ensure that the goods they sell meet the necessary safety and quality standards to prevent unsafe products from reaching buyers.
E-Commerce Platforms Respond: Amazon’s Assurance
In response to the investigation, Amazon issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the safety and compliance of its product listings. The company reiterated its policy of removing non-compliant products and taking appropriate action against sellers who fail to adhere to Indian laws and regulations.
“We require sellers of all products to comply with applicable laws, regulations, and Amazon policies. We ensure our selection meets industry-accepted standards, and we develop innovative tools to prevent unsafe products from being listed,” said Amazon in a statement. While Amazon assures that it is taking corrective measures, the scale of the problem raises questions about how well these platforms are policing the products listed on their sites.
Flipkart Faces Legal Action as Well
Flipkart’s involvement in the distribution of uncertified goods has also drawn criticism. Hundreds of toys, uncertified speakers, and stainless-steel vacuum-insulated bottles were seized during a raid at a Flipkart warehouse in Gurugram. It was discovered that the products, including those confiscated from Amazon, lacked the BIS certificates required for consumer safety.
Although Flipkart has not yet released an official remark on the matter, the corporation is probably going to respond quickly to address the growing body of evidence against it.

The Bigger Picture: Consumer Safety at Risk
The absence of supervision and regulation in the e-commerce sector is a major problem that is brought to light by this crackdown on Amazon and Flipkart. Online marketplaces such as Amazon and Flipkart offer convenience, but they also present the difficulty of making sure the goods they sell adhere to legal requirements. Uncertified goods entering warehouses and being offered for sale to unwary customers is a major betrayal of consumer confidence.
Ensuring product safety and adherence to national regulations should be a top goal as India continues to embrace e-commerce. BIS’s actions serve as a reminder that everyone is subject to the law, even the biggest e-commerce sites.
