Billionaire businessman Elon Musk has once again altered his X (formerly Twitter) username, this time reviving the alias “Harry Bolz.” This unexpected move has intrigued his followers and sparked online discussions. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX is known for his playful and often cryptic social media behavior, frequently using humor and wordplay to engage with the public. However, this particular name change comes at a crucial moment—just after Musk and a group of investors proposed a staggering $97.4 billion offer to acquire OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

Musk has used the “Harry Bolz” pseudonym before. In 2023, he changed his name to the same moniker, causing a buzz among social media users and the press. But what is the significance of “Harry Bolz,” and why has Musk decided to bring it back now?

For those unfamiliar with the reference, “Harry Bolz” is a humorous and somewhat crude play on words, resembling the slang term “hairy b****.” When Musk first used this alias in 2023, he acknowledged the joke by tweeting, *”Tbh, I’m just hoping a media org that takes itself way too seriously writes a story about Harry Bōlz.”* Predictably, many news outlets took the bait, giving the joke the attention Musk had anticipated.

Musk has a history of using internet memes and wordplay to grab headlines. In December 2023, he switched his username to “Kekius Maximus,” a name that appeared to be a blend of “Kek” (a meme linked to Pepe the Frog) and “Maximus Decimus Meridius,” the legendary character portrayed by Russell Crowe in *Gladiator*. At the time, his profile picture featured Pepe the Frog wearing golden armor while holding a video game controller.

These antics are part of Musk’s broader social media strategy, where he often trolls the media, amuses his audience, or influences public discourse in unpredictable ways. Given this history, his return to the “Harry Bolz” alias could simply be another example of Musk entertaining himself and his followers with internet culture references.

A Possible Distraction?

Some observers and analysts suspect that the timing of Musk’s username change is not coincidental. The switch to “Harry Bolz” happened just hours after reports emerged that Musk and a group of investors had made a $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI.

Musk’s relationship with OpenAI has been tumultuous. As a co-founder of the company, he was instrumental in its early development but later parted ways due to differences in vision. Since then, he has frequently criticized OpenAI, particularly its CEO, Sam Altman, and its growing ties to Microsoft.

By suddenly reviving the “Harry Bolz” persona during this high-stakes business move, Musk may be attempting to divert media attention, lighten the mood, or simply entertain himself while the discussions unfold. Given his unpredictable nature, it’s difficult to determine whether this is a deliberate tactic or just Musk indulging in his usual online humor.

Sam Altman Rejects Musk’s OpenAI Buyout Offer

Despite the enormous $97.4 billion bid, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman swiftly turned down Musk’s offer. Taking to X, Altman responded with sarcasm, saying, “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”

Speaking at the AI Action Summit in Paris, Altman reinforced his position, stating, “OpenAI is not for sale. OpenAI’s mission is not for sale.” He went further, openly criticizing Musk, suggesting that this was just another attempt by Musk to take control of OpenAI after being unable to outcompete it in the AI industry.

Altman’s remarks highlight the ongoing rivalry between the two tech moguls. Musk has frequently voiced concerns about OpenAI’s trajectory, particularly its alliance with Microsoft. Meanwhile, OpenAI executives have dismissed Musk’s critiques, arguing that his own AI company, xAI, is simply struggling to match OpenAI’s rapid progress.

Musk’s Impact on Social Media and Cryptocurrency Markets

Whenever Musk makes cryptic social media moves—whether by changing his name, posting memes, or making vague statements—online markets and discussions react instantly. His influence is particularly noticeable in the cryptocurrency industry.

Following Musk’s latest shift to the “Harry Bolz” alias, a cryptocurrency token bearing the same name experienced a 127% price surge against SOL. This pattern is nothing new. In the past, Musk’s tweets about Dogecoin and other digital assets have caused dramatic price fluctuations, demonstrating his ongoing impact on meme-driven financial trends.

What’s Next for Musk?

As always, Musk remains unpredictable. Whether “Harry Bolz” is just a lighthearted joke, a tactic to divert attention from the OpenAI controversy, or part of a broader strategy remains unclear. However, one thing is certain—he has succeeded in capturing public interest once again.

With his bid for OpenAI rejected and tensions between him and Altman growing, many are wondering what Musk’s next move will be. Will he attempt another offer for OpenAI? Will he develop new AI products through his own company, xAI? Or will he continue engaging in social media stunts, potentially adopting an even more bizarre username next?

Musk’s ability to command attention—whether through business deals, memes, or cryptic online behavior—ensures that whatever happens next, the world will be watching.
