When it comes to space and social media, it’s impossible to mention some facts and achievements without connecting Elon Musk. However, this time things have slightly gotten a bit unusual. Another of Musk’s ventures with grand space ambitions SpaceX has allegedly relocated its workforce out of Brazil. What’s going on?
SpaceX’s decision to evacuate employees from Brazil raises the following questions:
In an email to SpaceX employees, the President of SpaceX Gwynne Shotwell asked everyone to stop working in Brazil. Even more, the company had to relocate its employees who were nationals of other countries away from Brazil.
What led to this sudden and perhaps hasty evacuation? Musk has been clashing with a Brazilian Supreme Court Justice by the name Alexandre de Moraes. The heart of the matter is in X, or Twitter, the social media platform that Musk owns. Since late last year, de Moraes has been urging X to ban abusive accounts that allegedly promote hatred and fake news. But Musk, the revolutionary entrepreneur that he is, did not surrender that quickly.
SpaceX is a separate company and they did even claim that SpaceX/Starlink broke any laws. Purely capricious. https://t.co/nVxcPU6J1a

X Marks the Spot in Court
Events escalated early in August when Musk made a shocking decision of ceasing X’s-facilities in Brazil. This was not accomplished in order to reduce electricity expenses, but for the purpose of protecting his workers. Then, last week, the Brazilian court took the matter a bit higher and prohibited X from operating in the country until it complies with some legal obligations that the local laws demand, including but not limited to paying fines and appointing a legal director in the country. In fact, they even froze SpaceX’s Starlink money in Brazil.
Musk did not just sit back and watch this happen. He took to his own stage of frustration and threatened to confiscate properties of Brazil’s Government if his companies properties were not returned. It is somewhat similar to “he who finds, will keep” but it’s a much more legal affair.
Who Cares About This Legal Face-Off?
You may ask, “How does it concern me?” In fact, it concerns you a great deal! This legal fight goes beyond the concerns in relation to individuals like Musk and his organizations, nevertheless, it will most definitely affect foreign investors’ interest in addition to technology enterprises in Brazil. Arthur Lira, a giant in Brazil’s Congress, has had it, declaring that such legal vagueness might repel others.
The issue could impact Musk’s other businesses such as Tesla, noted Tim Higgins, a business columnist from the Wall Street Journal. If there is smoke, there is bound to be fire and Higgins says that this disagreement could lead to chain reactions with effects on investor sentiments as well as on the operations of the empire that Musk owns.
The Bigger Picture: What does this mean for tech giants?
Besides all this drama, the government of Brazil intends to tap its own revenue from the large technology firms in a bid to help it achieve its fiscal targets by 2025. This move marked by freezing StarLink’s finances right after Forum ban X could be a sign of how Brazil is turning a new leaf on its approach to handling multi-national companies.
The Bigger Picture or the End of the Story?
Now, SpaceX and Starlink are trying their best to follow the decisions made in court, at the same time, they are working on legal cases to solve this situation. Musk, who is always up for a legal fight, appears willing to take on Brazil’s supreme court.
