The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the continent’s largest representative body for journalists, has announced it will stop sharing content on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, starting January 20, 2025. This decision coincides with the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States, a move the EFJ believes poses a serious threat to democracy and the freedom of the press.
Ethical Concerns Prompt Withdrawal
The EFJ’s decision stems from its growing concerns over the platform’s transformation since Musk took control. The organization has accused X of becoming a “machine of disinformation and propaganda,” which no longer aligns with the values of media integrity and democratic principles that the EFJ upholds.
“We cannot continue to be part of a platform controlled by someone who dismisses the media and journalists,” said Maja Sever, President of the EFJ, explaining the organization’s stance. Sever’s comments reflect the core of the EFJ’s concerns: Musk’s actions and rhetoric have undermined the media’s role in society, which the EFJ believes is essential for a healthy democracy.
Musk’s Ties to Trump Raise Red Flags
Musk’s support for Trump, both financially and publicly, has raised alarms across the global journalistic community. After Trump’s election, Musk famously claimed that “mainstream media is dead,” accusing journalists of widespread dishonesty. The close relationship between Musk and Trump has fueled suspicions that X could become a tool for political manipulation rather than a neutral platform for open discourse.
The EFJ is particularly troubled by the idea of Musk, already a powerful figure in tech, working alongside Trump, who is known for his contentious approach to the media. Musk’s potential role in Trump’s administration as head of the new “Department of Government Efficiency” only deepens the EFJ’s fears. The organization views this partnership as a threat to press freedom and an alarming consolidation of political and media power in the hands of a few individuals with vested interests.
X’s Shift Toward Extremist Content
Since Musk’s acquisition of X, the platform has been criticized for fostering disinformation, conspiracy theories, and extremist rhetoric. Critics, including the EFJ, argue that X has increasingly become a space that amplifies far-right ideologies and divisive content, moving further away from its role as a platform for open, constructive debate.
“We are witnessing a platform that no longer serves the public interest,” said Sever. “Instead, it’s promoting the personal and political agendas of Musk and his allies.” This shift has prompted a growing number of European media organizations to reconsider their presence on the platform. Renowned outlets such as The Guardian, Dagens Nyheter, La Vanguardia, Ouest-France, and Sud-Ouest have already pulled out, citing similar concerns over the platform’s editorial direction.
A Call for Ethical Alternatives
The EFJ’s move signals a broader call to action for media organizations and individuals who value press freedom. The federation has urged its members to migrate to other platforms that prioritize ethical journalism and media pluralism. The decision is a direct challenge to the way X has evolved under Musk’s leadership, with the EFJ asserting that the platform no longer aligns with their commitment to fighting discrimination, hate speech, and misinformation.
With over 295,000 members across 44 countries, the EFJ is one of the most powerful advocates for journalists’ rights and press freedom globally. This decision represents a significant shift in the media landscape, marking the EFJ’s refusal to support a platform that no longer upholds the standards of ethical journalism.
