Estrella’s experience sheds light on a troubling issue: not everyone has a large platform to voice complaints, which raises questions about how many similar cases go unresolved.
Similarly, Fredericke Lapierre faced a similar ordeal when she discovered her concert tickets were no longer in her account. Although she and her friends eventually managed to attend the event, they were forced to buy new tickets, spending hundreds more. For Lapierre, this ordeal has left her wary of buying tickets through Ticketmaster, fearing another loss of tickets and the financial strain it could bring.
These incidents seem to be linked to a data breach Ticketmaster experienced earlier this year, with the company notifying customers of potential exposure in July. According to Ticketmaster, the breach, first detected in May, may have compromised customer credit card details and contact information.
While Ticketmaster maintains that no passwords were exposed, tech experts, like columnist Carmi Levy, suggest that hackers can use leaked data, such as email addresses, to exploit weak or reused passwords. By combining this information with passwords previously exposed in other breaches, hackers can potentially access Ticketmaster accounts, posing as legitimate users to transfer or sell tickets.
Ticketmaster’s response has largely focused on encouraging customers to strengthen their account security. They recommend unique passwords and activating two-step verification, which can prevent unauthorized access. Yet, these recommendations haven’t reassured all customers, who feel that Ticketmaster’s platform should provide a higher level of inherent security, especially given its position as the primary ticketing service for many major events.

They argue that Ticketmaster’s approach often feels reactive rather than proactive, with solutions coming only after significant public pressure or repeated attempts to contact the company.
In response to these security issues, technology experts recommend that users take additional precautions to protect their online accounts. Carmi Levy advises customers to create strong, unique passwords for each of their online accounts, especially those related to payments or sensitive information.
He also suggests using password managers to keep track of these details securely and enabling two-step verification whenever possible, which provides an added layer of protection by requiring a secondary code for account access. These measures can go a long way in safeguarding personal information and preventing unauthorized access.
