Spanish authorities have apprehended five individuals accused of defrauding two women out of over $350,000 by posing as the renowned actor Brad Pitt. This scheme, linked to a sophisticated criminal organization, involved intricate tactics designed to exploit the victims’ emotions. The arrests were made in two separate operations—three suspects were taken into custody last November, followed by two more in July.
The Elaborate Deception
The scheme began when the fraudsters contacted their victims through an online fan page dedicated to Pitt. They cleverly disguised themselves as the Hollywood star and engaged in a series of emails and instant messages, which led the women to believe they were having direct conversations with him. Over time, the scammers manipulated their victims into believing they had formed a close, romantic bond with the actor.
Authorities detailed how the fraudsters cultivated this emotional connection, which ultimately laid the groundwork for their money-making plot. Once the women were sufficiently convinced of their relationship with Pitt, the scammers requested financial assistance, claiming various fabricated needs.
The victims, one from Bilbao and another from Granada, fell prey to this elaborate ruse. The woman from Bilbao sent €150,000 (approximately $168,000) through multiple transactions, while the Granada resident transferred €175,000 (around $195,500). In total, the women lost more than $350,000 to the fraudsters. Currently, investigators have managed to recover about €85,000 ($94,000) from the total amount stolen.
The names of the suspects have not been released, but they now face serious charges, including fraud and money laundering, as the investigation continues to unfold.

Following the arrests, Matthew Hiltzik, Brad Pitt’s publicist, issued a cautionary message to fans. He emphasized the dangers of responding to unsolicited online communications from individuals claiming to be celebrities. “It’s unfortunate that scammers exploit the strong emotional ties fans have with stars,” Hiltzik remarked, underlining the emotional toll such fraud can take. He urged people to verify the authenticity of any online outreach, especially from figures who lack a significant social media presence.
The Spanish Interior Ministry echoed these warnings, advising the public to be cautious when interacting with unknown individuals online. They highlighted that online fraud is an escalating issue, urging vigilance against anyone soliciting money or personal favors through digital channels.

Unlike many celebrities, he has chosen to remain off platforms like Instagram and Twitter, making it easier for fraudsters to impersonate him without raising suspicions.
