Florida Sees 1,150% Surge in VPN Demand After Pornhub Block

A recent report by vpnMentor reveals a dramatic spike in virtual private network (VPN) usage across several U.S. states following Pornhub’s implementation of access restrictions, with Florida experiencing the most significant surge.

Following Pornhub’s decision to block access in states with new age verification requirements, VPN demand has skyrocketed. Florida witnessed the most extreme increase, with VPN interest jumping by an astonishing 1,150% immediately after Pornhub began limiting access on January 1, 2025.

The Age Verification Landscape

Florida’s new regulations require third-party age verification for publishers of content deemed “harmful to minors,” forcing Pornhub to block state-specific IP addresses. Instead of accessing content, Florida users now encounter a message urging them to contact state lawmakers and protest the age verification requirements.

State-by-State VPN Demand

The vpnMentor analysis highlighted significant VPN interest across multiple states:

  • Florida: 1,150% increase
  • Oklahoma: 1,060% increase
  • Utah: 967% increase
  • South Carolina: 171% increase
  • Tennessee: 40% increase
  • Louisiana: 200% increase

These figures demonstrate users’ determination to circumvent geo-blocking measures, similar to how sports fans have historically used VPNs to bypass regional broadcast restrictions.

Broader Context of VPN Usage

The report noted additional factors driving VPN demand, including the recent brief implementation of a U.S. TikTok ban. Researchers analyzed state-by-state search volumes, web traffic, and VPN service download clicks to compile their findings.

Despite the localized restrictions, Pornhub’s overall traffic remains substantial. The website recorded over 1.8 billion visits by the end of 2024, maintaining approximately 500 million more visitors than its closest competitor, XVideos.

While VPNs offer a workaround for content restrictions, cybersecurity experts warn of potential risks. Many VPN services lack the robust security measures of major internet providers.

In 2023, a significant cybersecurity breach exposed 360 million SuperVPN user records, including sensitive information like passwords, email addresses, and personal financial data. This incident underscores the importance of careful VPN selection.

vpnMentor recommends users select VPN services with:

  • Strong encryption
  • No-logging policies
  • Automatic “kill switch” features
  • Built-in DNS leak protection

Broader Implications

The report reveals more than just a technical workaround. It highlights the complex interplay between content regulation, user behavior, and digital privacy. As states implement stricter age verification requirements, users seek alternative methods to access restricted content.

Pornhub’s U.S. traffic has already seen a significant decline, with 15 million fewer visits from U.S. IP addresses in the previous year. However, the massive global user base suggests that regional restrictions have limited impact on the platform’s overall reach.

The vpnMentor report illuminates a fascinating digital cat-and-mouse game between content platforms, state regulators, and internet users. As age verification laws become more prevalent, individuals continue to seek methods of circumventing restrictions, driving innovations in digital privacy technologies.

The escalating adoption of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) underscores a fundamental human need: unfettered access to the global information highway. In an era of increasingly fragmented and controlled digital spaces, individuals are actively seeking tools to bypass geographical restrictions, circumvent censorship, and shield their online activities from prying eyes. This surge in VPN usage reflects a growing distrust in the digital landscape, where users are wary of government surveillance, data breaches, and the erosion of online privacy.

However, while VPNs offer a powerful means of regaining control over one’s digital experience, they also present unique challenges. The very nature of these technologies, designed to mask online identity and location, can make it difficult to identify and mitigate potential security threats. Malicious actors can exploit VPN connections for nefarious purposes, and the lack of transparency within some VPN providers raises concerns about data logging and potential misuse of user information.
