Fntastic’s Legal Battle with Yakutia.Info: A Controversial Strategy to Protect Reputation
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

In a move that has raised eyebrows across the gaming community, Fntastic, the development studio behind the notorious The Day Before, has filed a lawsuit against a small media outlet called Yakutia.Info. The studio claims the outlet defamed them by labeling their much-hyped game a “scam” and accusing them of borrowing gameplay mechanics from other titles. While Fntastic’s legal action may appear to be an attempt to protect their reputation, it has sparked a series of questions regarding the studio’s future and their controversial approach to public relations.

The Legal Dispute: What Happened?

The lawsuit stems from two articles published by Yakutia.Info, a relatively obscure news website based in Yakutsk, Russia, where Fntastic’s founders, Eduard and Aisen Gotovtsev, hail from. The first article referred to The Day Before as a “scam,” while the second cited a third-party YouTube video that accused the game of borrowing mechanics from other popular titles.

In response to the articles, Fntastic demanded an apology and the removal of the content, arguing that the pieces damaged their reputation. Yakutia.Info, however, amended the articles—changing the word “scam” to something less defamatory, akin to “blunder,” and clarifying the borrowed mechanics claim. Despite these changes, Fntastic remained unsatisfied, insisting on a complete retraction and apology.

The legal battle has now escalated, with Fntastic seeking court intervention to force the outlet into compliance, something Yakutia.Info views as an infringement on its free speech rights. The outlet’s decision to stand firm in the face of the lawsuit has further inflamed the situation, particularly as they highlight the fact that Fntastic has not pursued similar legal action against more prominent outlets.

Why Yakutia.Info? A Focus on the Smallest Target

It’s not lost on many that Fntastic chose to sue Yakutia.Info, a local, lesser-known news site, rather than larger, more established media outlets that have criticized The Day Before in the past. Major gaming portals and personalities, including popular YouTube channels, have labeled the game as a “scam” for its troubled development and numerous delays. The decision to focus legal action on such a small, independent site raises questions about whether Fntastic is avoiding the bigger targets, potentially due to the legal and financial resources required to take on more influential outlets.

Some critics suggest that Fntastic’s move to sue a tiny media outlet may indicate a lack of confidence or capability to tackle larger challenges. After all, the Gotovtsev brothers have been at the center of controversy regarding The Day Before for years, yet they have not taken legal action against the more prominent players in the media landscape.

The Perception of Legal Intimidation

Fntastic’s lawsuit seems to mirror the strategy often employed by big corporations like Nintendo, which has been known for using legal threats as a means of intimidating smaller content creators or media outlets. This tactic has drawn significant criticism, as it is often seen as an attempt to stifle free speech and prevent criticism.

However, this approach can backfire, as it tends to fuel further resentment from both the public and media. In Fntastic’s case, the studio’s decision to focus on Yakutia.Info rather than engaging in constructive dialogue or accepting their fair share of criticism has left many gamers wondering if they are trying to avoid addressing the underlying issues with The Day Before. This lawsuit may end up backfiring by casting Fntastic in an even worse light and turning the gaming community against them.

Will Fntastic Succeed?

While it’s impossible to predict the outcome of the lawsuit with certainty, it’s likely that Fntastic will struggle to achieve the results they desire. Legal battles can be costly, and Fntastic’s history of controversy might make it difficult for them to win any public support. The gaming community, already skeptical of the studio due to the failures of The Day Before, may view this lawsuit as another example of the company’s inability to handle criticism.

In the end, the damage caused by this legal action could far outweigh any potential gains. The studio may be inadvertently reinforcing the very criticisms they wish to silence, thus worsening their public relations situation.

A Risky Move for Fntastic

Fntastic’s decision to sue Yakutia.Info is a risky one that raises important questions about how gaming studios handle criticism and legal disputes. By targeting a small, relatively unknown media outlet, they may alienate fans and industry professionals who view the lawsuit as an overreaction. Ultimately, this case may prove to be another chapter in the ongoing saga of The Day Before—a game surrounded by controversy and missteps. Whether Fntastic can turn their reputation around remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: this legal battle is unlikely to help their cause.
