Ford has just delivered one of the loudest silent statements in drag racing history. The all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 stormed down the strip at an NHRA event in Charlotte, clocking an astonishing 6.87-second quarter mile at 221 mph, officially setting a new world record for an EV.
That number matters. It beats Ford’s own previous electric drag benchmark of 7.62 seconds, set by the Cobra Jet 1800 last year, by a massive 0.75 seconds. In drag racing terms, that’s not an improvement. That’s domination.
2,200 Horsepower of Instant Force
The name tells the story. Cobra Jet 2200 sends a staggering 2,200 horsepower to the wheels, making it one of the most extreme electric drag machines ever built.
Unlike the earlier Cobra Jet 1800, which used four motors and four inverters, Ford engineers simplified the setup this time around. The new model runs with two electric motors and two inverters, cutting weight, reducing complexity, and boosting efficiency.
Ford says the updated system reaches 98 percent efficiency, while the motors and inverters weigh roughly half as much as the outgoing setup. That’s a rare win-win in engineering: more power, less weight.
Built for One Job: Explosive Acceleration
This machine was designed for a single mission to destroy quarter-mile times.
Power comes from a 900-volt electrical architecture paired with a 32 kWh battery pack. Charging takes around 20 minutes, enough to comfortably meet NHRA’s 45-minute turnaround requirement between runs.
But the real surprise is what Ford borrowed from traditional drag racing.
The Cobra Jet 2200 uses a clutch system, allowing the driver to release full power instantly at launch. That sharp power delivery helps maximize traction off the line, where races are often won or lost in the first few feet.
It also features a multi-speed transmission, something still uncommon in EV performance cars. Ford says keeping the motors in their ideal power band through the run can reduce quarter-mile time by as much as a second.
Smart Weight Balance and Safety Engineering
Ford didn’t just chase horsepower. The battery layout was designed to fine-tune weight distribution, helping the car plant power more effectively under brutal acceleration.
Safety also got serious attention. The car includes a pyrotechnic circuit breaker, which can instantly sever the high-voltage system using a small explosive charge if needed. That aligns with NHRA regulations for high-performance EV competition.
Why This Run Matters Beyond Racing
While the Cobra Jet 2200 is a purpose-built drag car, some of its innovations could influence future road-going EVs.
High-efficiency motors, lighter inverters, advanced battery cooling, and 900-volt systems are all technologies that can improve charging speed and performance in consumer vehicles.
That’s especially interesting at a time when several major US automakers have slowed or reworked EV plans. Ford recently shifted direction on the next-generation F-150 Lightning, while GM has delayed some future electric truck launches.
