The legal pressure on X and its owner Elon Musk is intensifying in Europe, with French authorities now taking one of their strongest actions yet against the social media platform.

Paris’ public prosecutor has officially opened a judicial investigation into X over allegations tied to the misuse of algorithms, fraudulent handling of data, and the spread of harmful content — including child pornography and AI-generated sexual deepfakes allegedly linked to Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Musk’s AI venture.

The development marks a major escalation in the growing clash between European regulators and American Big Tech companies over free speech, AI governance, and platform accountability.

French Authorities Turn Up The Heat

The investigation, announced on May 7, places investigating judges in charge of the case and opens the door for potential formal charges against multiple entities connected to Musk’s tech empire.

French prosecutors are reportedly seeking to place X.AI Holdings Corp, X Corp, xAI, Musk himself, and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino under formal investigation.

According to the prosecutor’s office, this could happen either through official summons or, if those summons are ignored, through judicial warrants that would effectively place the parties under formal investigation.

The move follows Musk’s failure to appear for questioning after being summoned on April 20, further escalating tensions between the billionaire entrepreneur and French authorities.

So far, representatives for X and Musk have not publicly commented on the latest development.

Allegations Go Beyond Algorithms

While the initial probe reportedly focused on alleged manipulation or abuse of recommendation algorithms and concerns over fraudulent data practices, the investigation has significantly widened in recent months.

French authorities are now also examining suspected complicity in the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the creation of explicit AI-generated deepfakes through Grok.

The allegations add another layer of controversy around generative AI tools and the growing fears surrounding unregulated AI-generated content online.

Deepfakes, especially sexually explicit AI-generated images and videos, have become a global concern as governments scramble to create safeguards against misuse. Regulators across Europe have been particularly aggressive in demanding stricter moderation standards from major platforms.

For X, which has repeatedly promoted a “free speech” approach under Musk’s ownership, the investigation could become a defining legal and reputational battle.

Europe Vs Big Tech: A Growing Battle

The case also reflects the widening divide between European regulators and Silicon Valley giants.

Over the last few years, the European Union and individual European governments have introduced increasingly strict digital regulations aimed at curbing misinformation, protecting users, and forcing tech companies to be more transparent about how their platforms operate.

Platforms like Meta, Google and now X have faced mounting scrutiny over content moderation, AI safety, user privacy, and algorithmic transparency.

France has emerged as one of the most aggressive jurisdictions in pursuing legal action against tech companies accused of failing to control harmful content.

For Musk, who has frequently criticized European regulations as restrictive and politically driven, the French investigation represents another flashpoint in his ongoing confrontation with regulators.

Musk Calls Investigation “Politically Motivated”

Back in July, Musk dismissed the accusations and accused French prosecutors of launching what he described as a “politically motivated criminal investigation.”

The billionaire has repeatedly argued that X is being unfairly targeted because of its relaxed moderation policies and its emphasis on open speech.

Since acquiring Twitter and rebranding it as X, Musk has rolled back several moderation systems, reinstated previously banned accounts, and positioned the platform as a digital town square with fewer restrictions.

Supporters say the changes protect free expression. Critics argue they have opened the floodgates for misinformation, hate speech, and harmful content.

A Defining Moment For AI And Social Media Regulation

The French probe could have consequences far beyond X itself.

As governments worldwide race to regulate artificial intelligence and online platforms, this case may become an important test of how far authorities can go in holding tech executives personally accountable for platform activity and AI-generated content.

For Musk and X, the stakes are now much bigger than a reputational dispute. The investigation could shape the future relationship between AI companies, social media platforms, and regulators in one of the world’s most tightly regulated digital markets.
