Geely is preparing to crash one of the most exclusive parties in the SUV world. The Chinese automotive giant has confirmed that its bold new Galaxy Cruiser will come to the UK, lining it up directly against icons like the Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
Still officially wearing its “concept” badge, the Galaxy Cruiser is already very close to production. Speaking to Autocar, Geely designers made it clear this isn’t a distant design exercise. Sales are expected to begin in China by the end of this year, with UK launch plans already locked in.
From Shanghai to Showrooms
The Galaxy Cruiser first turned heads at the Shanghai Motor Show, where its boxy proportions, upright stance, and unmistakable off-road cues drew obvious comparisons with established 4×4 legends.
Design studio director Flavien Dachet admits the inspiration is intentional. The Defender, G-Wagen, and even the Ford Bronco follow familiar design codes. What matters, he says, is how those cues are reinterpreted. In the Galaxy Cruiser’s case, the result is a more modern, tech-forward take on the rugged SUV formula.
Built on Serious Hardware
Underneath, the Galaxy Cruiser rides on Geely’s SEA-R platform, the same architecture that underpins the Zeekr 9X and the plug-in hybrid version of the Lotus Eletre. While those models lean heavily into luxury performance, Geely says the platform has proven far more capable off-road than expected.
Tested in harsh Chinese desert conditions, the architecture reportedly exceeded internal targets, giving Geely confidence to push into genuine off-road territory.
Tech-Heavy Off-Road Credentials
The concept showcases some serious hardware. Independent active suspension manages each wheel individually, helping maintain traction in low-grip conditions. There’s also an impressive 800mm wading depth, steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire systems, and extensive use of AI to support advanced driver assistance.
Crucially, the AI won’t override the driver. Instead, it highlights obstacles and suggests safer paths when things get tricky, a nod to real-world usability rather than hardcore rock-crawling theatrics.
Hybrid Power, Big Numbers
Production versions are expected to use a hybrid setup similar to its platform siblings. That means a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with multiple electric motors and a large 70kWh battery. In China’s CLTC cycle, electric-only range is quoted at up to 220 miles, though European WLTP figures will be lower.
With three electric motors likely providing four-wheel drive, power output should be substantial. The Zeekr 9X delivers 1381bhp, while the Eletre PHEV is expected to hit around 912bhp, setting expectations firmly in super-SUV territory.
A New Direction for Geely
Unlike traditional hardcore off-roaders, the Galaxy Cruiser is aimed squarely at luxury and family buyers who want presence, comfort, and capability in one package. For Geely, it marks a confident step into a segment it hasn’t played in before and one that could seriously shake up the UK’s premium 4×4 landscape.
