General Motors has announced a voluntary recall of its high-performance Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and Corvette ZR1 models, citing a potential fire risk during refueling. The recall affects 2023–2026 Corvette Z06s and 2025–2026 Corvette ZR1s in North America.
The Fire Hazard
According to GM’s recall notice, the issue stems from the left-side radiator and cooling fan setup found in these specific models. If gasoline overflows into the fuel-filler pocket during refueling, the fan can blow vapors or spilled fuel toward hot engine components. Under the wrong circumstances, this could trigger a fire outside the engine bay.
The recall, filed under safety campaign number N252514930, highlights that malfunctioning fuel station pumps and driver error—such as topping off after the nozzle automatically clicks—may worsen the risk. GM warns owners not to overfill their tanks and to strictly follow fueling instructions outlined in the owner’s manual.
Forums Spot the Stop-Sale
Corvette enthusiasts were among the first to raise alarm. On Corvette Forum, several owners reported dealers issuing a sudden stop-sale order. One post read: “Dealer called to tell me car can’t leave until a safety problem is fixed.” Another suggested the problem was initially described as a “fuel rail issue.”
When tested against GM’s recall lookup tool, Z06 VINs confirmed that recall notices had been issued as of August 21.
The Official Remedy
For now, the official fix is still in development. GM has said dealers will install an insert or shield designed to divert any spilled fuel away from ignition sources. However, that part is not yet available.
Until repairs begin, owners are advised to refuel carefully. GM emphasizes best practices such as ensuring the nozzle is fully inserted, avoiding attempts to “top off” the tank, and always shutting off the engine before filling.
Models Affected, and Not Affected
It’s important to note that the recall only applies to the Corvette Z06 and the upcoming Corvette ZR1. Other versions of the C8 Corvette, including the Stingray and E-Ray, are not part of the campaign.
While Stingrays with the Z51 package also feature cooling fans near the filler area, GM clarified that the unique radiator and fan layout on the Z06 and ZR1 is what creates the elevated risk. At this time, the recall is not expected to expand to other trims.
GM’s Statement
In a statement to the media, a GM spokesperson said:
“General Motors is voluntarily recalling model year 2023–2026 Chevrolet Corvette Z06s and 2025–2026 Corvette ZR1s in North America to resolve an excess fuel spillage issue during refueling. This is a rare occurrence, and malfunctioning filling station pumps appear to be a contributing factor. The safety of our customers is the highest priority for the entire GM team, and we’re working to remedy this matter as quickly as possible.”

The recall is a reminder that even flagship performance cars aren’t immune to unforeseen safety concerns. For Corvette owners, the fire risk appears low but serious enough to halt deliveries until a fix is rolled out. For now, the safest move is patience and careful fueling.
