Since GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV registrations have been open, the vehicles are being sold out. Now the waitlist means waiting for two or more years. The orders have exceeded the production capabilities of the item.
The news was revealed during a media briefing ahead of the 2024 GMC Sierra EV revealed. It was attended by Buick and GMC Global Vice President Duncan Aldred. Aldred said the Hummer EV, in both pickup and SUV formats, is “sold out for two years or more.” In the first 9 months of 2022, GM has only produced 2,570 units of the Hummer EV Pickup, which is way less than the 90,000 units needed just to meet reservations. However, production has been picking up as of late, as GM produced 700 Hummer EV pickups in September, which represents almost 30 percent of all the 2,570 units built.
In order to meet the demand, GM has opened its first Ultium Cells plant in Ohio. GM has also announced that Hummer EV production will be idled for November as the plant undergoes upgrades to produce future products. 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup production began late last year at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan. The pickup truck uses GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium Drive motors, which deliver 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque to the Hummer EV Pickup Edition.

“GMC Hummer EV customers are excited about the off-road capability and incredible on-road performance their supertruck offers—all with zero-tailpipe-emissions,” a representative for the brand told Robb Report. “This enthusiastic interest has led to over 90,000 reservations for both Pickup and SUV, and we’re excited to say this incredible demand has led to Hummer EV reservations being fully booked at this time.”
This backlog might explain why GMC closed the reservation book for the Hummer EV last month. Production of the vehicle began late last year at General Motors’s Factory Zero plant in Michigan. Since then, 2,570 of the zero-emission beasts have rolled off the line. Production has picked up recently, though. In September, the factory built over 700 Hummer EVs, which represents about 27 percent of those built to date. Despite the delay, don’t expect demand for GMC’s bruiser to dissipate anytime soon. The reborn ‘90s classic is one of the most impressive EVs currently available from a performance standpoint. The top-of-the-line Edition 1 variant has an Ultium-powered drivetrain that can produce 1,000 hp and 11,500 ft-lbs of torque. It also has a range of 329 miles. With numbers like that, the commanding vehicle will remain coveted for the foreseeable future.
