Godfather of AI Warns That Tech Could Wipe Out Humanity, Urges Action

Prof. Geoffrey Hinton, a British-Canadian computer scientist and one of the “godfathers” of AI, has raised the alarm about the potential risks of AI to humanity. The Godfather of AI warns tech could wipe out humanity within the next 30 years. In a recent interview, he revised his earlier prediction, now estimating a “10% to 20%” chance that AI could lead to human extinction within the next 30 years. This marks a sharp increase from his previous assessment of a 10% risk.

Hinton, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics this year for his groundbreaking work in AI, expressed concern over the rapid pace of technological advancement. “The development is much faster than I expected,” he said. Hinton highlighted that the AI systems being developed are advancing far quicker than anticipated, leading to significant safety concerns. “We’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before,” he warned.

He compared humans to toddlers in the face of advanced AI. “Imagine yourself and a three-year-old,” he said, suggesting that, in the future, humans could be outpaced by the intelligence of AI systems. Hinton’s comments echo fears that artificial intelligence could eventually surpass human intelligence, presenting a potentially existential threat.

Regulation Urged for AI Safety

Hinton’s call for caution comes at a time when AI’s rapid growth has sparked debate about its potential dangers. He argued that relying on the free market alone to ensure the safe development of AI is insufficient. “My worry is that the invisible hand is not going to keep us safe,” he explained. Instead, he stressed the need for government regulation to ensure AI technologies are developed responsibly and safely. The Godfather of AI warns tech could wipe out humanity, urging for stronger government intervention in AI regulation.

The Nobel laureate also warned that AI’s impact could resemble that of the Industrial Revolution, which transformed society by making human labor less relevant. In the future, AI could replace human intelligence, creating significant societal shifts. “Ordinary human intelligence will not be at the cutting edge anymore,” he said.

The Need for Responsible AI Development

Hinton’s remarks also touched on the broader societal implications of AI. While he acknowledged AI’s potential to bring significant advancements in fields like healthcare, he emphasized that it is crucial to develop these technologies carefully. He expressed concerns about a future where job displacement caused by AI could widen the gap between rich and poor, harming society.

His comments also highlight the possibility that AI, if left unchecked, could be used by “bad actors” for harmful purposes. Hinton’s resignation from Google last year stemmed from his desire to speak more openly about the risks posed by uncontrolled AI development.

AI Experts Divided on Risks

Despite Hinton’s warnings, other AI experts, such as Yann LeCun, the chief AI scientist at Meta, have downplayed the existential threat of AI. LeCun has suggested that AI could help solve humanity’s biggest challenges rather than cause its downfall. However, Hinton remains cautious, believing that the development of artificial general intelligence could pose significant risks if not handled properly.

As AI development accelerates, the Godfather of AI warns tech could wipe out humanity due to unforeseen risks. Hinton’s main concern revolves around the speed at which AI technology is developing. He believes that the rapid pace of progress, combined with AI systems becoming more intelligent than humans, could lead to catastrophic outcomes. His analogy of humans being like toddlers compared to advanced AI is meant to emphasize the stark difference between human intelligence and that of machines.
