Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that by 2025, the company’s search engine will undergo a profound transformation, empowering it to address more complex questions than ever before. Speaking at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit, Pichai assured that the advancements in Google’s search capabilities would go far beyond current expectations.
“Search will change profoundly in 2025,” Pichai shared, adding that users will be astonished by the new capabilities early in the year. “We’ll be able to tackle more complex questions and offer solutions that weren’t possible before.”
Google vs. Microsoft: A Battle for AI Supremacy
Pichai also took the opportunity to address comments made earlier by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who had suggested that Google should have already claimed victory in the AI race. In response, Pichai pointed out that Microsoft is heavily reliant on third-party AI models through its partnership with OpenAI. He expressed confidence in Google’s AI approach, stating, “I’d love to compare Microsoft’s models to ours directly.”
He continued, highlighting that Google is still in the early stages of a significant shift in AI. “The future holds vast potential for innovation, and we are deeply committed to staying at the forefront of AI research,” Pichai said.
AI’s Central Role in Google Search
Pichai emphasized that Google has integrated AI most extensively into its search functionality, significantly improving search quality and language comprehension. Technologies like BERT and MUM have already advanced how the platform understands and processes queries.
“We’ve been using AI in search for years, and now tools like Gemini are reaching over a billion users,” he explained. “We’re just getting started, and the potential is enormous.”
Google’s AI strategy spans everything from foundational research to advanced infrastructure. The company is also investing in hardware like its sixth-generation tensor processing units (TPUs) to power these advancements.
The Importance of Trustworthy Information in a Sea of Content
Amid the growing concern over AI-generated content flooding the internet, Pichai argued that Google Search will become more valuable than ever in helping users find reliable and accurate information.
“In a world overwhelmed by content, users need trustworthy sources they can rely on,” he stated. “Google Search will always be essential for delivering that reliability.”
Pichai pointed out that many platforms, such as Facebook and YouTube, often encourage limited forms of content consumption. In contrast, Google aims to provide a broader, more reliable spectrum of information to its users.
Defending the Future of Search
The conversation also touched on concerns that Google’s core search business could be threatened as AI-powered platforms become more prevalent. Some critics argue that AI-driven content could lessen the relevance of traditional search engines.
Pichai firmly disagreed, insisting that search will only grow in importance, especially in the face of misinformation. “As the internet fills with less authentic content, search becomes even more valuable in helping people find the truth,” he said.
Google has already started rolling out major AI updates to its search engine, with features like AI-generated search summaries and enhanced Google Lens functionality. These updates allow users to search using videos, offering a more dynamic and interactive search experience.
