Google is set to unveil its Pixel 10 series on August 20, and early leaks have already started shedding light on some exciting new features. One of the most notable is a significant enhancement to the telephoto camera the introduction of a tele-macro shooting mode. This innovation will allow the telephoto lens to double as a macro photography tool, opening up new creative possibilities for users.

Alongside this camera update, Google is also bringing its most significant chipset upgrade yet, switching to a TSMC-manufactured Tensor G5 processor. Other updates include new color options, support for Qi2 wireless charging, and subtle hardware refinements. With these changes, the Pixel 10 series appears poised to elevate Google’s smartphone lineup significantly.

Traditionally, macro photography on smartphones has been relegated to ultrawide cameras with autofocus, enabling close focusing for detailed shots. This is a trend Google followed in earlier Pixel models, and it continues with the Pixel 10 series. However, the telephoto lens is now getting a macro mode of its own, resulting in what’s referred to as a tele-macro capability.

This feature means users will have the choice of using either the telephoto or ultrawide lens for macro photography. Why both? The ultrawide can focus on subjects at extremely close range, while the telephoto lens can zoom in from farther away, potentially producing sharper and more detailed images assuming the subject isn’t too close for the lens to focus.

Essentially, Google is offering flexibility without redundancy. If a subject is too close for the telephoto lens to capture clearly, the ultrawide lens will take over, albeit potentially at a slight quality trade-off. It’s a practical solution that ensures macro photography is always an option, regardless of how near the subject is.

Continued Emphasis on Computational Photography

Google’s Pixel phones have long led the industry in computational photography, and the new tele-macro function aligns perfectly with that philosophy. By combining hardware versatility with smart image processing, Google is ensuring that users can capture professional-looking macro shots without needing external lenses or attachments.

It remains to be seen how the software will handle switching between lenses for macro mode, but based on Google’s track record, it’s likely to be a seamless, automatic experience that simplifies the user workflow.

Tensor G5: A New Chapter in Pixel Performance

Another major development in the Pixel 10 series is the debut of Google’s Tensor G5 SoC (System-on-Chip). This marks the first time Google is sourcing its chip manufacturing from TSMC, the Taiwanese foundry renowned for building chips for Apple, AMD, and others.

Previous Tensor chips were manufactured by Samsung, and although functional, they were often criticized for underwhelming performance and thermal efficiency. The move to TSMC is expected to bring about significant improvements in both areas, delivering faster processing, better battery life, and cooler operation.

The Tensor G5 is expected to enhance AI and machine learning capabilities even further, reinforcing Google’s mission to infuse smart software directly into hardware.

Design Refresh and New Colorways

Leaks also suggest a visual refresh for the Pixel 10 series. Google will introduce new color options to keep the lineup feeling fresh and modern. While the exact shades remain unconfirmed, early reports point to a bolder and more refined design aesthetic.

This design update is a continuation of Google’s recent trend toward playful but premium looks, appealing to users who value both function and fashion in their smartphones.

Qi2 Wireless Charging – Without the Apple-like Magnets

Google is also adopting Qi2 wireless charging for the Pixel 10 series, which promises more efficient power transfer and alignment, especially with accessories. However, unlike Apple’s MagSafe, which uses built-in magnets for perfect placement, Google will instead rely on magnet-equipped cases to achieve similar results.

This approach gives users some flexibility: those who want the magnetic snap-and-charge experience can opt for Google’s official cases, while others can continue using third-party cases or charge without alignment aids.

Pixel 10 Availability and Launch Timeline

The Pixel 10 launch event is rumored to take place on August 20, with the devices expected to become available for purchase on August 28. As in previous years, we can anticipate two models: a standard Pixel 10 and a Pixel 10 Pro, each offering varying levels of hardware and display sophistication.

While final specs and pricing haven’t been confirmed, the combination of tele-macro photography, improved processing power, and modern design elements positions the Pixel 10 series as a compelling competitor in the premium Android space.

The Google Pixel 10 family doesn’t appear to be a radical overhaul, but rather a carefully considered refinement of what already works well. With smarter camera options, better performance via the Tensor G5 chip, and more intuitive wireless charging, Google is continuing to focus on the user experience first a strategy that has won the Pixel series a loyal following.

As the launch approaches, all eyes will be on how Google executes these features in real-world use. If the early leaks hold true, the Pixel 10 may well be one of the most balanced and intelligent smartphones of 2025.
