If you’re new to the cryptocurrency world, one of your greatest worries will be being unable to access your digital wallet. Whether it’s from having your phone taken, getting a computer damaged or simply forgetting your password, the chances of having something happen that prevents you from accessing your wallet can cause a lot of anxiety. Most non-custodial wallets come with a recovery system that enables you to recreate access to your funds if you know the correct recovery formulas. Your wallet does not contain your actual crypto (e.g. coins), but rather holds the private keys which give you access to those coins on the blockchain. Recovery of your wallet is the process by which you recreate your own private keys using a recovery phrase or other authorized method of saving your wallet. Understanding recovery of crypto wallets can help you prevent loss of funds.

This guide will discuss all the information necessary to recover your wallets, how recoveries work, methods to recover, and best practices to protect your crypto assets.

What Is a Crypto Wallet Recovery?

If you were to have your device damaged, lost, replaced, or reset, you can get back into your cryptocurrency wallet through crypto wallet recovery. Although the crypto coins you own exist on the blockchain and not on a device, recovering your wallet will not recover your coins. Instead, wallet recovery recreates the private keys needed to access the coins held on that blockchain. The recovery process is usually dependent on using a secret back up known as recovery phrase or seed phrase. If the recovery phrase is correct and complete, then the individual should be able to restore their wallet to another compatible device or application.

Understanding Recovery Phrases

The recovery phrase is at the core of nearly every crypto wallet recovery system. The generation of a random sequence of words (either 12 or 24) that represent your private key cryptographic information is handled by the wallet software when you create a new wallet. Each word will be arranged in a specified order and they are the only way to recreate the wallet’s private keys.

The recovery phrase acts as the master backup for the wallet (it contains the complete private-key information needed to create the wallet). Therefore, if someone has access to your recovery phrase, they can completely restore your wallet and access your assets, which is why it is critical that you keep your recovery phrase private and secure. Unlike passwords, recovery phrases can’t be reset or retrieved via customer support, so it is important that you safeguard your recovery phrase.

How Wallet Recovery Works

Recovery of your wallet is accomplished using standard cryptographic algorithms that work with many wallet providers and allow interoperability between different wallets. After you set up a supported wallet application, you will be able to either restore your old wallet by using the “Restore Wallet” or “Import Wallet” option, or create new hardware or software; the option you choose will require you to enter your recovery words in the same order they were set up. Your software will then use mathematical calculations to locate the original private keys and their corresponding wallet addresses. There will be a new live link where you can check both the wallets’ amounts & each transaction through the ledger. You will need to know each wallet’s address when checking a transaction. Once the funds have been returned, they will stay in their original place. Verification of all transactions is publicly available on the Blockchain and will always be publicly viewable.

There is no actual transfer of funds; rather, it is simply a process of returning your access to your original point for your funds.

Recovery Phrase vs. Private Key

Both backup methods (recovery phrases and private keys) serve different functions in relation to utilizing cryptocurrencies. Private keys allow you to access a single blockchain address and authorize transactions on that blockchain address via a private key. Recovery phrases function as a master backup for the private keys associated with a wallet (which can be many private keys). Therefore, rather than backing up every single private key associated with a wallet, you simply want to securely store the recovery phrase. By having only one recovery phrase, the addition of this method of backing up wallets has contributed to the ease of managing cryptocurrency, while also providing a method of maintaining a high level of security.

What Happens If You Lose Your Device?

Even though you may have lost your cellphone, laptop, or hardware wallet; this does not mean that you have lost your cryptocurrency. By simply having your recovery phrase (backup), you can put in a new wallet (same or compatible) on another device to restore complete access to your funds. After completing the restoration process, your balances will show up because they are still on the blockchain, not on your device that was misplaced. However, if both the device and recovery phrase are lost; nearly all chance of recovering your wallet is gone.

Can You Recover a Wallet Without the Recovery Phrase?

For the majority of instances, the answer to this question is no. A non-custodial wallet is constructed such that only the owner can access the recovery credentials. The wallet developer and blockchain networks do not retain any backup copies of the recovery phrase. This decentralized structure offers the highest level of protection while placing all of the responsibility for securing your assets on the owner. Some custodial wallets operated by centralized exchanges utilize a different business model. Because the custodian holds the private keys, users can often recover their accounts by verifying their identity or resetting their password. Therefore, you should consider whether your wallet is custodial or non-custodial before keeping a large amount of digital currency in it.

Common Wallet Recovery Mistakes

The recovery process is often fraught with easily avoidable mistakes that put users’ wallets at risk of being compromised. One of the most frequent errors made is inputting the recovery words out of order, as each word has a location, and typos, however small, will result in your failed recovery. Screenshots, cloud storage and email are also not valid options for backing up your recovery phrase because they can be hacked or stolen. Therefore, you should not put your recovery phrase in any digital form such as these. Phishing scams trick users that there are fake wallet applications or websites that are asking users to enter their recovery phrases. Once submitted, attackers immediately gain control of the wallet. Always verify that you are using the official wallet software before beginning any recovery process.

Best Practices for Safe Wallet Recovery

Starting with your recovery phrase, the safest way to recover your wallet is to properly protect it. Don’t keep your recovery phrase written down on paper or in a digital storage system. Store multiple copies of your recovery phrase in separate secure places so that you do not lose them, whether from theft, fire, or natural disasters. Never give out your recovery phrase! Only official wallet providers and exchanges will ask for your recovery phrase and there is no reason why anyone should ever ask for this information. Use caution when restoring your wallet and ensure you are downloading from a legitimate site. Be certain that you’re using the right software for your wallet by checking every recovery word prior to beginning your restoration process. You can add security to your recovery phrase by adding extra recovery phrases, option passphrases and/or hardware wallets.

The Future of Crypto Wallet Recovery

The rise in use and acceptance of cryptocurrency is leading to an expanding range of recovery practices that are becoming more user-friendly yet remain highly secure. New recovery technologies that provide easier means of returning to a user’s cryptocurrency wallet include social recovery wallets, which have trusted contacts assist the user in re-establishing wallet access without requiring the user to provide their private keys, and multi-signature wallets, which distribute the recovery responsibility for that wallet across multiple devices and/or individuals, thereby lowering the single user reliance risk on an individual backup for that user’s lost wallet. Some developers are also examining the possibility of implementing decentralized identity systems as well as new cryptographic methods, so users can streamline their recovery process without sacrificing privacy and ownership rights. While innovation in recovery methods continues, traditional recovery phrases still represent the most common and widely regarded method for backing up your cryptocurrency wallet.

Conclusion

It is essential for anyone working within the space of cryptocurrencies or blockchain technology to have a solid comprehension of recovering their wallets via use of recovery phrases. Unlike with traditional bank accounts, a wallet has no central authority to go through to regain access. If one understands how to recover a wallet, takes steps to secure their recovery phrases and follows good backup methods, the chances of being locked out from their crypto holdings can be greatly reduced. In addition to that, a person could also protect his/her self against hardware malfunctions and/or unintentional loss of data by having taken proper precautions in a decentralized finance system.
