What is a countdown widget?

A countdown widget is a tiny, digital “icon” Or a sign that lives right on your home screen and keeps reminding you of something. Instead of constantly opening your calendar, you can simply see how the widget does the work for you. It’s a live shortcut that pulls data from an app to show a real-time ticker counting down days, hours and even seconds up until the event that you are waiting for. It’s perfect for staying updated about an upcoming event, especially if it is important stuff like an assignment or an exam, or even a flight!

Ways to add a countdown widget on an iPhone

If you want to add a countdown widget on your iPhone for any purpose, then these are the steps that you can follow.

Third-Party Apps

Using a party outside of the domain is the most common way to go about it. This is how most people do it. You can download an app like Countdown Star, create your event, and then long-press your home screen to add the widget. Whatever these apps are, they let you customize colors, fonts, and even add your own photos as backgrounds to make it even more personalized.

The Shortcuts App

If you’re not up for downloading new apps, you can build a custom Shortcut. You can create a script that calculates the difference between the current date on your calendar and the event date and then use an app like Widgy or Scriptable to display that number. It means more work, but it can be a unique thing to behold.

Lock Screen Widgets

If you’re using iOS 16 or a model that came later, you don’t even have to unlock your phone. You can add a “circular” or “rectangular” countdown widget directly under the clock on your Lock Screen. If you have a deadline approaching, this is a great way to go.

While these are the ways that can help you add a countdown widget, you also have some workarounds that don’t work. For example, you can add a note on your lock screen or the home screen that reminds you of the same thing. It is much less work, and it can work just fine if you don’t want a recurring reminder.
