Jevil, the secret boss in Deltarune Chapter 1, is one of the toughest enemies in the game. His wild, unpredictable attacks and chaotic dialogue make him stand out from every other foe you’ve faced. Defeating him isn’t just about brute strength — it’s about timing, patience, and a smart strategy. Whether you’re trying to spare him or take him down, this guide will help you beat Jevil and earn your reward.

The fight with Jevil is anything but ordinary. He doesn’t follow the usual patterns that most enemies in Deltarune do. Instead, he throws random, fast-paced attacks at you in waves that get harder as the battle continues. Jevil has about 3500 HP, but if you’re taking the pacifist route, you’ll be focusing on increasing his tiredness instead of reducing his health. He cycles through five different phases, with his attacks becoming increasingly difficult to dodge.
You’ll need sharp reflexes, solid preparation, and the right tactics if you want to survive the chaos.
Preparation: Items and Equipment
Before you enter Jevil’s cell, make sure your team is fully equipped and your inventory is ready. You’ll need healing items — lots of them. Here are some essentials you should bring:
- Top Cake or Spin Cake – These fully heal your party. Save them for emergencies.
- Dark Burgers – These provide solid healing and are easy to stock up on.
- Revive Mints – Critical for bringing back fallen allies during rough turns.
- Clubs Sandwich – Useful for healing everyone at once when things get hectic.
In terms of equipment, give your team items that increase defense or magic. Ralsei should be outfitted with magic-boosting gear so his healing and spells are more effective. Every little bit helps when you’re dodging spinning scythes and raining chaos.
Battle Strategies: Pacifist vs. Attack
There are two main ways to beat Jevil: spare him or defeat him outright. Let’s break down both methods.
Pacifist Strategy:
To spare Jevil, you need to wear him down until he becomes tired. Once that happens, Ralsei can cast Pacify and end the fight. The key actions are:
- Hypnosis – Requires all three party members and 50 TP. It increases Jevil’s tiredness and lowers his attack temporarily.
- Pirouette – Used by Kris for 20 TP. It slightly increases Jevil’s tiredness and has a random effect, such as reducing damage taken, healing, or changing Jevil’s patterns.
Use Defend often to build up TP quickly, then use Hypnosis whenever you can. Pirouette in between to nudge Jevil’s tiredness higher. Once he’s tired enough, a well-timed Pacify ends the fight.
Attack Strategy:
If you’re going for a straight-up win by reducing Jevil’s HP to zero, focus on high-damage moves and strong healing:
- Susie’s Rude Buster – A hard-hitting magic move. Use it whenever you’ve got enough TP.
- Kris and Susie – Should mainly attack, while Ralsei heals and defends to support TP gain.
Make sure to manage your items and TP wisely. Jevil’s attacks become more dangerous with each phase, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed if you don’t heal at the right times. Timing and patience are your biggest allies here.
Dodging Jevil’s Attacks
Jevil’s attack style is fast, unpredictable, and chaotic. One second you’re dodging carousel blades, the next, you’re jumping through strings of spades. Here’s how to stay alive:
- Stay calm – Don’t panic. Most attacks have patterns once you see them a few times.
- Learn from your mistakes – Each try teaches you something. Don’t expect to win on your first go.
- Use the corners wisely – Some attacks are easier to dodge if you stick near the edges of the screen.
You’ll likely need a few practice runs to get the rhythm right. That’s normal. With each attempt, you’ll get better at seeing what’s coming and dodging it smoothly.
Post-Battle Rewards
Depending on whether you spare or defeat Jevil, you’ll get a different reward:
- If you spare him, you receive the Jevilstail. It’s a piece of armor that boosts attack, defense, and magic.
- If you defeat him, you get the Devilsknife, a weapon for Susie that delivers high damage and also improves her magic.
Both rewards are worth the effort, so choose the one that fits how you like to play. If Susie is your main damage dealer, the Devilsknife is a great option. If you prefer more balanced boosts, the Jevilstail is better.
