What are blocked voicemails on an iPhone?

On an iPhone, “blocked voicemails” are the messages left by callers whose numbers you have added to your device’s blocked list or blacklist. When a blocked number attempts to call you, your iPhone silently routes the call directly to voicemail without ringing or notifying you, respecting your privacy. These voicemails are typically stored in a separate folder within the Phone app’s “Voicemail” section, often labeled “Blocked Messages.” This allows you to review them as per your choice without cluttering your main voicemail inbox. It’s important to note that while calls go to voicemail, text messages from blocked numbers are generally not saved and are silently discarded by the iPhone. The handling of blocked voicemails can sometimes depend on your cellular carrier, therefore, make sure that you also check that aspect.

What happens to the blocked voicemails on an iPhone?

When you block a number on an iPhone, calls from that contact are automatically silenced and routed directly to your voicemail. You will not receive a notification for these calls or voicemails, ensuring minimal disruption. These messages are then typically stored in a dedicated “Blocked Messages” folder within the Phone app’s “Voicemail” tab. They remain there until you manually delete them, or your voicemail inbox limit is reached. Once that happens, you may be required to delete some of the voicemails to create space. It’s important to understand that blocking a number on your iPhone handles calls differently than text messages. The new text messages from blocked contacts are generally discarded and you cannot retrieve them as well.

Steps to check blocked voicemails on an iPhone

If you have blocked voicemails on your iPhone, then you can use these steps to do so –

  • Open the Phone App: Find and click on the green “Phone” icon on your iPhone’s home screen.
  • Access Voicemail: At the bottom right of the screen, tap the “Voicemail” tab.
  • Locate Blocked Messages: Scroll down to the very bottom of your voicemail list, where you should see a distinct section, typically labeled “Blocked Messages” or “Blocked Voicemails.” This is what you need!
  • Review Messages: Tap on this section to view any voicemails left by numbers you have blocked. If this folder is not present, it indicates that no blocked callers have left messages.

If you feel that a blocked contact may have sent you a voicemail, but you cannot find it in the inbox, then try deleting some of the old voicemails. This will create some room in the inbox for the new voicemails. And if you feel like somebody in your blocklist may have sent you a voicemail and you need to hear it, try to hear it following the steps mentioned above.
