In Ghost of Yotei, the Black Night Kubo bounty is one of the more mysterious side-tasks players enjoy uncovering. With just the right outfit, timing, and location knowledge, you can summon this elusive foe and reap the rewards. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to help you track, summon, and defeat Black Night Kubo.

Black Night Kubo is a special duel target in Ghost of Yotei. He doesn’t appear in the landscape by default — you have to make him appear. The bounty describes him as “a killer dressed in black who haunted Teshio Ridge long before any fox spirit,” and notes his last known appearance in a dueling ring inside the Sentinel Forest.
Defeating him yields two main rewards:
- The Black Night Kubo’s Mask (a cosmetic item)
- 750 coins
Once defeated, you can return to the bounty broker (Kojiro at the inn) to collect your payout.
Step 1: Accept the Bounty at Red Crane Inn
The first step is to head to the Red Crane Inn in the Teshio Ridge region. There, find the bounty board and accept the Black Night Kubo contract. This will mark the general location for his appearance on your map and activate the quest.
Without accepting this bounty, you won’t be able to summon him, regardless of what you do in the world.
Step 2: Prepare a Black Armor Set
Here’s where things get a bit special: Black Night Kubo will only spawn if your character (Atsu) is wearing a black armor set or armor dyed mostly black. That means:
- Equip full armor that is all black, or
- Use black dye (or a scheme with a dominant black color) on an existing armor set
If your armor is not black (or mostly black), interacting with the summoning spot will not trigger anything.
If you lack black dye, visit the Black Dye House in western Teshio Ridge — there’s a merchant there who sells black dye and black-themed equipment. Once you’ve dyed or equipped black armor, you’re ready to move.
Step 3: Travel to the Black Night Dueling Ring
With your bounty active and armor set to black, your next destination is the duel clearing known as the Black Night Dueling Ring, located in Sentinel Forest, within the Teshio Ridge region.
Here’s how to find it:
- From Red Crane Inn, head northeast toward Sentinel Forest
- Search for a circular clearing, often with bamboo, lamp posts, and a straw mat or wood blocks near a corpse
- The “dueling ring” is usually just south or near the edge of the forest area
When you arrive, make sure you’re still in black armor — changing armor afterward won’t help.
Step 4: Summon Black Night Kubo
At the clearing, you’ll see woodblocks or a straw mat beside a corpse. To summon Kubo:
- Stand next to or interact with those woodblocks (or straw mat)
- “Clap” or strike the woodblocks — that triggers the ritual
If all conditions are met (you have black armor equipped), that action will cause a short cutscene and summon Black Night Kubo, kicking off the duel.
If nothing happens, double-check your armor color. If it’s not black (or leaning black), the ritual won’t work.
Step 5: Duel and Defeat Black Night Kubo
Once the duel begins, Black Night Kubo acts like a disciplined samurai-style opponent. To beat him:
- Focus on timing your parries. His attacks are deliberate and telegraphed.
- After a successful parry, follow up with heavy attacks or stagger-building combos.
- Watch for a red flash or multi-hit sequence — that’s your cue to dodge sideways, not backwards.
- When Kubo staggers or his posture breaks, use your strongest finisher or special skill, then back off to avoid retaliation.
- If he summons a shield or becomes guarded, try switching to a weapon that can break guard (for example, a kusarigama) to unbalance him.
Don’t rush. Patience, discipline, and reading his attacks will win the fight.
Step 6: Collect Rewards & Turn in the Bounty
After Black Night Kubo is defeated:
- Loot his body for Black Night Kubo’s Mask and coins
- Return to Kojiro, the bounty broker at the Red Crane Inn, and turn in the quest to receive the full 750 coins
