Copper is one of the most important crafting materials in Fallout 4. You may not think much about it at first, but once you start building settlements, placing turrets, wiring generators, and crafting advanced mods, you will quickly run out of it. If you want a strong base with proper defenses and power supply, you need a steady flow of copper.

Why Copper Is So Important

Copper is mainly used for:

  • Building generators and power conduits
  • Crafting electrical wiring
  • Placing turrets and defense systems
  • Upgrading weapon mods
  • Creating advanced settlement objects

Without copper, your settlements cannot run properly. Lights will not work. Turrets will not function. Advanced crafting becomes limited. That is why smart players start farming copper early in the game.

Scrap These Junk Items For Copper

The easiest way to get copper is by collecting and scrapping junk items that contain it. Many common objects in the Commonwealth break down into copper when scrapped at a workbench.

Here are the best junk items to look for:

  • Light bulbs
  • Vacuum tubes
  • Telephones
  • Hot plates
  • Military-grade circuit boards
  • Power relays
  • Fuses
  • Cooking pots
  • High-powered magnets

Always check the component list before dropping junk. If it contains copper, store it in your workshop. Over time, this adds up quickly.

A good strategy is to tag copper for search in the crafting menu. Once tagged, any junk item that contains copper will show a small magnifying glass icon. This makes farming much easier.

Best Locations To Farm Copper

Some areas in Fallout 4 are especially good for finding copper-rich junk.

Corvega Assembly Plant is a strong early-game location. It contains multiple light fixtures and industrial equipment that scrap into copper.

The Mass Pike Tunnel has several generators and electronic objects. These can provide a solid amount if you clear the area fully.

Military bases and radio stations are also excellent sources. These locations usually contain:

  • Circuit boards
  • Power relays
  • Military electronics
  • Industrial lighting

Always explore carefully and loot thoroughly. Many players miss valuable junk because they focus only on weapons and armor.

Buy Shipments Of Copper From Vendors

If you do not want to farm manually, you can buy shipments of copper from vendors. This is one of the fastest ways to solve a copper shortage, especially in mid to late game.

Vendors who commonly sell copper shipments include:

  • Trashcan Carla
  • Arturo Rodriguez in Diamond City
  • KL-E-0 in Goodneighbor
  • Deb in Bunker Hill

Shipments usually come in bundles of 25 or 50 copper. While they can be expensive, they are worth the caps if you are building large settlements.

If you invest in the Cap Collector perk, you can reduce prices and make this method more efficient.

Set Up Supply Lines For Better Management

If you have multiple settlements, copper can feel scattered and difficult to manage. The solution is creating supply lines.

With the Local Leader perk, you can assign settlers as provisioners. These settlers connect workshops across settlements. Once connected, all junk and crafting components become shared.

This means if Sanctuary has copper and Red Rocket does not, you can still build using the shared inventory. Supply lines save time and reduce frustration.

Use Industrial Water Purifiers To Earn Caps

One indirect method to secure copper is generating income and buying shipments.

Build industrial water purifiers in settlements near large water sources like Sanctuary. Purified water accumulates in your workshop over time. You can sell it to vendors for caps.

Use those caps to buy copper shipments in bulk. This turns water into a long-term copper solution.

Scrapping Settlement Objects

Some settlements contain pre-built objects that can be scrapped for copper.

Look for:

  • Broken lamps
  • Electrical boxes
  • Wiring setups
  • Damaged generators

Scrap everything you do not need before building new structures. This gives you extra materials without leaving your base.

Be careful not to scrap essential structures accidentally.

Perks That Help With Resource Farming

Certain perks make copper collection easier:

  • Scrapper: Gives extra components when scrapping weapons and armor.
  • Cap Collector: Improves buying prices.
  • Local Leader: Allows supply lines and stores.

While Scrapper does not directly multiply copper from junk, it helps overall resource gain, reducing pressure on single materials.
