The arrival of Eternatus, the colossal Legendary Pokémon from the Galar region, has sent shockwaves through the Pokémon GO community. This isn’t your standard raid boss encounter. Getting your hands on this Poison/Dragon-type beast requires strategy, timing, and a bit of grinding. If you’re ready to add this epic Pokémon to your collection, here is your essential guide to making it happen.

The One and Only Way to Catch Eternatus
For nearly all trainers, there is only one method to obtain a standard Eternatus. You must reach rank 60 on the free track of the special Go Pass: Max Finale. This pass was automatically distributed to all players starting Monday, August 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. local time. Unlike a typical quest line, leveling up this pass requires you to earn GO Points primarily by winning raids and Max Battles against Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon. The entire system is centered around the massive Max Finale event, making battle participation key.
The clock is ticking. Trainers only had until Sunday, August 24, at 9:00 p.m. local time to earn enough points to rank up. If you managed to hit rank 60, you then must claim your Eternatus encounter reward before Tuesday, August 26, at 9:00 p.m. local time. A very small group of players who attended the 2025 Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, California, received Eternatus earlier via special research; for them, the rank 60 reward was replaced with a massive pile of 890 Eternatus Candy.
Understanding the Max Finale Grind
The journey to rank 60 is a dedicated one. During the initial phase of the Dark Skies event, there was a daily cap on how many GO Points you could earn. However, the gates were flung wide open during the core event weekend. From Saturday, August 23, at midnight until the deadline on Sunday, August 24, at 9:00 p.m. local time, the daily cap was completely lifted. This allowed committed trainers to grind an unlimited number of points through raids and Max Battles to rapidly climb the pass ranks and secure their encounter.
The free pass track provides the encounter itself, along with a base amount of candy to start powering Eternatus up. A deluxe premium pass was available for purchase, offering greater quantities of candy and other items, but it was not necessary to actually catch Eternatus. Since you can only ever obtain one Eternatus, the free track is sufficient for completing your Pokédex.
The Role of Eternamax Battles
You might have seen the terrifying Eternamax form looming in raids during the event weekend. It’s crucial to understand that you cannot catch this form. After a successful battle against Eternamax Eternatus, which reportedly required a large group of trainers to defeat, it reverts to its regular form. The purpose of these epic battles is purely for rewards. Victorious trainers earn huge hauls of Eternatus Candy and Eternatus Candy XL, which are absolutely mandatory for powering up the one Eternatus you own.
These battles cost 800 Max Particles to initiate and offer incredible rewards for winning, including up to 140 Candy and 60 Candy XL. These rewards could even be doubled for a cost of 200 PokéCoins. Engaging in these battles was the most effective way to gather the resources needed to strengthen your Eternatus.
The Staggering Investment to Power Up
Eternatus isn’t just rare; it’s notoriously expensive to power up. To fully max out this Legendary Pokémon to level 50, you need a jaw-dropping 8,900 Eternatus Candy and an additional 8,900 Eternatus Candy XL. To put that in perspective, the candy from the free GO Pass only allows you to power it up to approximately level 21. Even with the bonuses from the paid deluxe pass, you’d only reach around level 38.5, still leaving you short of the level 40 cap. This design makes the Eternamax battles critical for any trainer who wants to use Eternatus in master league or five-star raids.
Unleashing the Dynamax Cannon Adventure Effect
The Eternatus you catch comes with a unique exclusive move: Dynamax Cannon. This isn’t just for battle; it’s an Adventure Effect. For a cost of 5,000 Stardust and 30 Eternatus Candy, you can activate this effect for 10 minutes. While active, it boosts the power of your Max Moves by one full level during Max Battles. This means a locked move becomes temporarily unlocked at level 1, and a maxed-out level 3 move gets a temporary boost to a super-powered level 4. You can extend this effect incrementally for more candy and dust, up to a maximum duration of 24 hours, though you can only have one Adventure Effect active at a time.
Important Restrictions to Know
Eternatus comes with several unique restrictions that set it apart from other Pokémon. It cannot be traded to other players under any circumstances. It also cannot be transferred to Pokémon HOME. The move Dynamax Cannon is a permanent part of its moveset and cannot be forgotten using a TM. Finally, your Eternatus will not transform into its Eternamax form, even when used in Dynamax battles or during the max phase of an attack.
