Passive Biomods are one of the most useful progression systems in Subnautica 2. While tools and vehicles help you survive dangerous waters, Passive Biomods quietly improve your character in the background. Some reduce oxygen use, some improve movement, and others help with survival during long dives. Because they work automatically, many players want to unlock as many as possible as early as they can.

The problem is that Subnautica 2 does not explain the system very clearly. You begin with only a small set of abilities, and many players spend hours exploring without realizing how the full Biomod system actually works. If you are trying to get more Passive Biomods, there are a few important steps you need to follow.

This guide explains exactly how to unlock additional Passive Biomods and use them effectively.

Start With The Welcome Center

Your first interaction with Biomods usually happens at the Welcome Center. This location becomes available very early in the game and introduces you to the Bio Lab system.

Once the Welcome Center receives power, you can access your first Biomod options. At this point the choices are limited, and many players think this is the complete system. It is not.

The Welcome Center only acts as an introduction. The larger progression path opens later.

Early Biomod access gives you:

  • One Active Biomod slot
  • One Passive Biomod slot
  • Basic upgrade choices
  • Access to Bio Lab functions

The key thing to understand is that the starting setup is only a foundation.

Get The Bioscanner As Soon As Possible

The Bioscanner is arguably the most important item if your goal is collecting more Passive Biomods.

Unlike a standard scanner, the Bioscanner allows you to study lifeforms and gather biological data that unlocks additional upgrades. Without it, your Biomod list remains extremely small.

Many players continue exploring with the normal Scanner and wonder why they are not earning more abilities. The reason is simple: new Biomods are heavily tied to biological research.

Once you obtain the Bioscanner, your progress opens up dramatically.

Scan Creatures And Lifeforms

After obtaining the Bioscanner, start scanning everything you encounter.

Do not only scan aggressive creatures. Scan passive fish, unusual organisms, plants, and anything that appears different from common life around the starting region.

Each scan contributes toward progression, and over time additional Biomods become available in your Bio Lab.

Players often rush through areas and ignore smaller creatures because they appear unimportant. In reality, some of those scans can contribute to unlocking useful Passive abilities.

A good rule is simple:

  • See a new creature
  • Scan it immediately
  • Check your Bio Lab afterward

Repeating this process consistently builds your collection much faster.

Explore New Biomes

Biomod progression is not only linked to creatures. Exploration also matters.

New environments usually contain species and biological structures that are unavailable elsewhere. If you stay close to your starting area for too long, your progression slows down.

Push outward carefully and visit:

  • Coral regions
  • Cave systems
  • Ruins
  • Deeper ocean zones
  • Thermal areas

Every new environment increases your chances of discovering fresh scan targets.

The game rewards curiosity. Players who explore aggressively usually unlock more options much earlier.

Know Which Passive Biomods Matter Most

Not every Passive Biomod gives the same practical value.

Some are useful for specific situations, while others help almost constantly.

Examples of useful Passive Biomods include:

Oxygen Control

This reduces oxygen consumption while remaining still. It becomes extremely useful during scanning sessions or while gathering resources.

Sea Skimmer

This increases movement speed near underwater surfaces and terrain. Faster movement means safer exploration and shorter travel times.

Slow Metabolism

This reduces food loss over time. Long expeditions become easier because you spend less effort managing survival meters.

Camouflage

This can reduce predator attention under certain conditions, making dangerous exploration less stressful.

Different playstyles benefit from different combinations.

Can You Increase Passive Biomod Slots?

This is currently where many players become confused.

Right now, unlocking more Passive Biomods does not necessarily mean unlocking more Passive Biomod slots. Current early access versions appear to keep players limited in how many can be equipped simultaneously.

Instead of stacking many abilities together, you collect options and switch between them depending on your situation.

Think of Passive Biomods as a toolkit rather than permanent upgrades.

Before deep exploration, you might prefer Oxygen Control.

Before long travel sessions, Sea Skimmer may work better.

Before dangerous encounters, Camouflage could become more useful.

The system is designed around flexibility rather than equipping every bonus at once.

Building a larger collection gives you more choices, and those choices become increasingly valuable as the ocean grows deeper and more dangerous.
