Grading Pokémon cards is a fantastic way to preserve, authenticate, and boost the value of your collection. Whether you’re a collector looking to protect cherished cards or an investor hoping to maximize profits, card grading is an essential step. This guide breaks down the process of getting your Pokémon cards graded, including choosing a grading company, preparing your cards, and understanding the benefits of grading.

Why Grade Your Pokémon Cards?

Grading transforms your Pokémon cards from mere collectibles to professionally certified items. This process involves evaluating the card’s condition, confirming its authenticity, and encapsulating it in a tamper-proof case. Graded cards fetch higher prices in the market, are easier to sell, and are better preserved for the long term.

Some of the most notable benefits of grading include:

  • Protection: Grading companies seal your cards in sturdy, clear cases that protect them from environmental damage.
  • Authentication: Professional graders ensure your card is genuine and not counterfeit or altered.
  • Value Increase: A high-grade card can significantly enhance its market value, especially rare or pristine cards.
  • Marketability: Graded cards are more attractive to buyers and collectors.

Step 1: Choose a Grading Company

The most reputable grading companies are PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), Beckett Grading Services (BGS), and Certified Guaranty Company (CGC). Each has its strengths and pricing structures.

  • PSA: Known as the gold standard, PSA uses a straightforward 1-10 grading scale. Their service is highly recognized, and PSA-graded cards typically fetch a premium. However, their fees can be higher, and turnaround times longer.
  • BGS: Beckett is praised for its subgrades, which provide detailed insights into a card’s condition. It’s ideal for collectors aiming for flawless cards and the exclusive “black label” for perfect grades.
  • CGC: A newer option in the card grading space, CGC offers competitive prices and faster turnaround times. They’re great for collectors seeking affordable options and detailed grading notes.

Step 2: Prepare Your Cards

Proper preparation ensures your cards are protected during the submission process and can prevent damage that might reduce their grade.

  1. Inspect Your Cards: Look for flaws on the card’s surface, corners, edges, and centering. Even minor imperfections, such as print lines or scratches, can lower the grade.

  2. Protect the Cards: Place each card in a penny sleeve (a thin plastic sleeve) and then into a semi-rigid cardholder. These protect the cards while allowing graders to remove them easily without damage.

  3. Secure the Package: Wrap the sleeved cards in bubble wrap and pack them in a sturdy box. Label the package clearly if required by the grading company.

Step 3: Submit Your Cards

Most grading companies require you to create an account on their website and fill out a submission form. This form asks for details about the cards, their declared value, and the grading service level you prefer.

  • Service Levels: Companies offer various options depending on the card’s value and how quickly you need the grading done. For example:
    • PSA’s bulk service is economical for lower-value cards but takes longer.
    • Beckett and CGC provide express options for faster results at higher prices.

After completing the form, include it in your package and ship the cards using a secure, trackable method.

Step 4: Wait for Your Cards

The grading process typically includes evaluation, authentication, and encapsulation. Turnaround times vary by company and service level. Standard submissions can take several weeks, while express options might return in just a few days.

Understanding Grading Criteria

Grading companies assess cards based on the following:

  • Centering: The alignment of the card’s design relative to its edges.
  • Corners: The sharpness and cleanliness of the corners.
  • Edges: The condition of the card’s borders.
  • Surface: The quality of the card’s front and back, including any scratches, stains, or print errors.

Cards receive a numerical grade (1-10), with higher grades commanding higher values. For example, a PSA 10 represents “Gem Mint” quality, meaning the card is flawless under magnification.

Step 5: Enjoy the Benefits

Once graded, your cards return sealed in tamper-proof cases with their grade clearly displayed. These encapsulated cards are easier to store, showcase, and sell. Grading also reassures buyers of the card’s authenticity and quality, making it a valuable investment.

Getting your Pokémon cards graded can be a game-changer, whether you’re preserving cherished memories or enhancing your collection’s worth. With proper preparation and by choosing the right grading service, you can elevate the value and appeal of your cards while ensuring their protection for years to come.
