The Katana in The Forest is a highly prized weapon, not just for its style but also for its effectiveness in combat. As a fast and reliable melee weapon, it offers some great advantages, particularly when dealing with cannibals and mutants. However, acquiring it requires a bit of exploration, as it’s hidden away in one of the caves in the game. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you locate and obtain the Katana so you can gain an edge in your survival journey.
Step 1: Preparing for the Journey
First, it’s essential to prepare for the journey into Cave 1, also known as the Dead Cave, where the Katana is found. Make sure you have plenty of supplies, such as food, water, and health items. The cave can be dangerous, with various enemies lurking within, so having a few weapons for backup is a good idea. Consider bringing a torch or a lighter to help with visibility, as the cave system can be very dark. Although the Katana is relatively easy to reach once you’re inside the cave, it’s always best to be prepared.
Step 2: Locating the Dead Cave Entrance
To find the Katana, you’ll need to head to Cave 1. This cave is situated on the eastern side of the map, not far from the river and southeast of the Great Canyon. There are a few entrances to this cave, but one of the most convenient is the entrance marked by a bright yellow rope that leads down into the darkness. This specific entrance is easier to find if you start near the river, making it a bit simpler for players unfamiliar with the terrain.
Step 3: Navigating Through the Cave
Once you’ve climbed down the rope into the Dead Cave, start following the cave’s main path. Be cautious, as there might be a few enemies nearby. As you progress deeper into the cave, you’ll come across another rope to climb up. At this point, follow the wooden boards and proceed carefully. Avoid using a light if possible, as this can alert enemies to your presence, especially the aggressive mutants who roam the cave.
Keep moving through the passageways until you come to a fork in the path. Take the left passage and follow the wooden boards laid on the ground. Once you pass this section, you should see a bridge-like structure made of wooden planks. Cross it, and from here, you can safely use your lighter to help you see better. After crossing the first bridge, take the right passage at the next fork and continue forward.
Step 4: Finding the Katana
Eventually, you’ll come across a room with a significant amount of loot. This is a clear indicator that you’re getting close to the Katana. In this area, you’ll find a corpse, which has the Katana lying beside it. It’s hard to miss, as the weapon is situated prominently near the body, and you can pick it up immediately. Along with the Katana, you’ll also find various items like cash, watches, and medicine, which can be useful for crafting and survival.
Step 5: Using the Katana Effectively
Now that you’ve obtained the Katana, it’s time to put it to use. One of the biggest advantages of this weapon is its incredible speed. Unlike other melee weapons in The Forest, the Katana allows for rapid attacks, which can prevent enemies from retaliating effectively. However, there are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. For instance, the Katana has no block value, which means you can’t rely on it for defensive maneuvers. Additionally, while it’s fast, it doesn’t do as much damage as other heavy weapons, like the Modern Axe.
The Katana’s lack of a blocking feature can make combat tricky if you’re up against larger groups of enemies. However, if you’re facing one or two mutants, the speed of the Katana often allows you to take them down before they have a chance to hit back. It’s an ideal weapon for players who prefer quick, offensive playstyles over defensive strategies.
