Do you want to improve your privacy by hiding the following and followers from your friends? Here is what you can do! Follow the guide to know how you can do it. So, let’s get started.
Is it possible to hide followers from people?
As of January 2026, Instagram still does not provide a single “toggle switch” that hides your followers or following lists from people you’ve already approved. The platform’s core design remains focused on social transparency for connected users. While you can easily hide these lists from the general public by going private, those you follow can generally still have access to see your connections and more. Some verified creators and specific regions are testing a “Mutual Friends” view that limits visibility, but it is still not available to everyone. It may roll out for everyone, but it is not a certainty. But we’ll find you some middle ground to know how you can still do something to improve your privacy.
Ways to hide followers and following on Instagram from friends
While it is not totally possible, let’s get you started on what you can possibly try.
The Private Account Method
This is usually the primary defense. By switching to a Private Account, you get to instantly hide your follower and following lists from anyone who doesn’t follow you. But the people who are your friends on Instagram do not qualify for this exemption. The people who are not added as your followers will not be able to see your posts, stories, and more. However, your friends can still do it.
Remove Follower
If you want to hide your lists from a specific friend without doing a full block or making them unable to find you on the platform, you can go to your Followers list and tap on Remove next to their name. If your account is private, they’ll be moved out and can no longer see who you follow or who follows you.
Restrict for a “Quiet” Distance
If you don’t want to unfollow the person, you can also use the Restrict feature, which is found by tapping the three dots on their profile. While it doesn’t physically hide the list, it limits their interactions and hides their comments from others, working just fine. Although it doesn’t completely cut them off, it still restricts things to some extent.
Keep Checking Your Lists
It is better to keep an eye on your followers list to know all the accounts that you have approved as your followers. If you feel that someone shouldn’t be on that list, you can remove them. This instantly takes their capability to view your follower and following list.
