DLSS 5 is one of the most talked-about graphics features on PC. NVIDIA’s new neural rendering technology can add extra detail, lighting, shadows, and realistic-looking effects to games. While official support is limited to compatible games, community-made DLSS 5 mods can bring similar technology to many other PC titles. The process is not truly universal, though. Games use different graphics APIs and rendering paths.

What You Need Before Installing
Check its graphics API and back up the original files. Community tools mainly target Windows games, with support depending on the mod and game.
You will generally need:
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
- A recent NVIDIA graphics driver
- The DLSS 5 mod or installer
- ReShade with full add-on support for manual installations
- A supported game executable
DLSS 5 is designed for newer NVIDIA hardware, while community implementations can differ. Do not assume that a mod will work simply because your game supports DLSS.
Back Up Your Game First
Find the actual folder containing the game executable. Do not install the mod into the launcher folder by mistake. Before replacing anything, copy existing NVIDIA DLSS and Streamline files somewhere safe. This makes recovery much easier.
Look for files such as nvngx_dlss.dll, nvngx_dlssnr.dll, and other Streamline DLLs. If something goes wrong, restoring these backups can return the game to its original state.
Using DLSS 5 Swapper
For compatible DirectX 12 games, DLSS 5 Swapper is an easy community option. It finds supported games, replaces required DLSS files, installs ReShade components, and creates backups.
Download a current release, extract it, and launch the program. Select the game you want to modify and let the tool detect its executable. Confirm that the selected path points to the real game, not Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or another launcher.
Choose the DLSS 5 installation option and allow the program to back up the original files. Once finished, start the game. If supported, enable DLSS in the graphics menu.
Manual Installation With ReShade
If an automatic installer does not support your game, a manual RenoDX and ReShade setup may work. Install the full add-on version of ReShade and select the game’s actual executable and matching graphics API.
Next, place the required DLSS 5 add-on and NVIDIA runtime files beside the executable, following the instructions supplied with the specific mod. Do not mix different DLSS 5 community branches, because incompatible add-ons can cause crashes or prevent the game from starting.
Launch the game and open the ReShade overlay. The default key is Home. From there, enable the DLSS 5-related add-on or effects included and adjust the available settings.
What About Games Without DLSS?
Some DLSS 5 solutions can use an OptiScaler bridge for games that support technologies such as AMD FSR 2, FSR 3, or Intel XeSS. Other projects use a feeder system to provide image and motion information when native DLSS is unavailable.
However, these methods are experimental. A game without suitable motion vectors or rendering data may produce artifacts, crashes, or little improvement.
Important Compatibility Warning
Do not install unofficial graphics DLLs into competitive multiplayer games protected by anti-cheat systems. File injection can trigger anti-cheat software and cause problems.
DLSS 5 mods can also reduce performance substantially. Neural rendering requires GPU resources, so higher visual quality does not always mean higher frame rates.
If the game crashes, restore your backed-up files and remove the ReShade and add-on files. Check the mod’s current instructions first.
