Steel is one of the most useful mid-game materials in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. It is needed for stronger weapons, armour, and tools, but you cannot make it in the normal Furnace. You need a Blast Furnace, Iron Ore, Coal, and the right setup. Here is the simple process for making Steel Bars and getting your Steel production running.
What You Need To Make Steel
Before starting, gather the materials and unlock the Blast Furnace. The standard Steel recipe is:
- 3 Iron Ore
- 3 Coal
- 1 Steel Bar as the result
You also need access to a working Blast Furnace. The station becomes available after you discover Coal. Building it requires several higher-level materials, including Granite, Iron Bars, Draconic Leather, Fire Runes, and Vault Cores, so this is not an early-game station.
The Blast Furnace also has a Fuel Pellet input. If the furnace is not operating, check that you have Fuel Pellets loaded in the correct section of its interface.
How To Get Iron Ore And Coal
Iron Ore is the first main ingredient. Mine Iron Ore in areas where iron nodes appear and make sure you have a suitable pickaxe. You can also smelt Iron Ore into Iron Bars in a regular Furnace if you need them for other crafting recipes.
Coal is the second ingredient and is especially important because discovering it unlocks the Blast Furnace. Coal can be found in Fellhollow, including cliff areas where coal nodes can be mined. Bring a strong enough pickaxe and watch your surroundings, since reaching some nodes may require building a path or platform.
Do not confuse Coal with Charcoal. They are different resources. Coal is used in the Steel recipe, while Charcoal has other crafting and fuel-related uses.
How To Make Steel Bars
Once your Blast Furnace is built, approach it and open its crafting interface. Put the required fuel into the fuel section, then add your materials.
For each Steel Bar, use:
- 3 Iron Ore
- 3 Coal
Start the process and the Blast Furnace will produce 1 Steel Bar. The standard recipe provides Artisan experience, making Steel useful for both progression and equipment.
If you already have Iron Bars, the Blast Furnace can also provide an alternative Steel recipe in the current game data. This route uses 1 Iron Bar and 3 Coal for a Steel Bar. However, the Iron Ore recipe is the more direct option if you are gathering materials specifically for Steel.
What Steel Is Used For
Steel is a major step above Iron and opens access to stronger equipment. Steel can be used for weapons, armour, and several tools. This makes it worth keeping a steady supply of Iron Ore and Coal instead of collecting Steel only when a recipe suddenly requires it.
Some Steel equipment includes:
- Steel Sword
- Steel Greatsword
- Steel Dagger
- Steel armour pieces
- Steel Pickaxe
- Steel Logging Axe
Many Steel equipment recipes also require materials such as Draconic Leather, Fine Thread, Vault Shards, and Willow Logs, so producing Steel is only one part of the full crafting chain.
When To Start Making Steel
You do not need to rush into Steel immediately. Iron equipment can carry you through the earlier stages, while the Blast Furnace requires an investment. Once you reach Fellhollow and start finding Coal, Steel becomes an upgrade. Keep your mining and Artisan progression moving alongside combat, because equipment depends on skills and stations working together.
If a recipe looks unavailable, check your Journal and confirm the station, skill level, and materials are unlocked.
