Do you want to improve your privacy on Facebook? It takes a lot of effort and is not just about turning off a toggle. We’ll talk about it in detail. So, let’s get started.
Can we go totally private on Facebook?
If you want an honest answer, you cannot have it 100%. While you can make your profile completely invisible to all the strangers by locking down your posts, hiding your friends list, and doing absolutely whatever you think you can do! You can still try to block the public and more from seeing your life, but you can’t hide from the platform’s data collection or the “sponsored” trackers, which will ultimately show up on your account anyway. However, if you know a specific person or group of people you want to hide your profile and its contents from, then we will discuss the same in detail ahead.
Steps to make your Facebook account completely private to non-friends
If you want to make your Facebook account totally private to people who are not your friends, then these are the steps that you can follow.
Lock Your Profile
This is the simplest and most go-to way to protect your information and content on the platform. If your region allows this, you can do it. Go to your Profile, click on the three dots next to the “Edit Profile” option, and then finally select Lock Profile. While it doesn’t affect your content, this instantly hides almost everything, including photos, posts, and stories from people who are not your friends.
Adjust the Content
If you can’t “Lock” your profile for any reason, you can go to Settings > Audience and Visibility > Posts and simply click on Limit Past Posts. This option switches all the posts to ‘friends only’. It means that your friends alone can view and open your uploaded content, and it won’t be accessible to people who are not your friends.
Hide from Google
This is another way! In Settings > How People Find and Contact You, find the option for search engines. Toggle this off if this is what you want. This makes your profile invisible if someone googles your name.
The Contact Wall
In that same menu, you can set “Who can send you friend requests” to Friends of Friends and set “Who can look you up by email/phone” to Only Me. This will further restrict social interaction.
Lock the Friends List
This is a strange but common phenomenon. Strangers often go through your friends’ list to find info. To fix this, just go to your Friends list, click on the three dots, and set visibility to Only Me.
These are a few things that you can do to make your Facebook content invisible to non-friends.
