What happens when we mute calls on an iPhone?
When you silence an incoming call on your iPhone by clicking on the side or volume button, the ringtone and vibration stop instantly. The call does not get rejected or disconnected, and the other person won’t even get notified about it. Instead, it continues to ring silently on your screen until it naturally times out and goes to voicemail.
Saying it again, that the person on the other end has no clue you silenced them because their phone just keeps playing the standard ringing tone, and there’s no way to know for sure unless they actually see you do it in person. If you use the system setting to silence unknown numbers entirely, those specific calls bypass your ringtone altogether, and there will be no manual intervention every time you try to silence the calls. They go directly to voicemail, and your phone screen will not even light up. However, you will still spot a missed call notification in your history later.
Steps to mute someone’s calls on an iPhone
If you want to mute someone’s calls on an iPhone, then these are the steps you need to follow.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to select the Focus option.
- Tap on the plus icon in the top right corner of the screen and choose Custom to build a new profile.
- Here, you have to name your focus mode, choose a color or icon for it, and then tap on Next. As soon as you are moved to the next screen, select Customize Focus to open the main panel for this specific profile.
- Tap on People under the allow notifications section to manage who can actually reach you. This is the control room!
- Switch the top toggle from Allow Notifications From to Silence Notifications From to flip the rule.
- Now, finally, tap on the add people button, select the contact or contacts you want to mute, and tap on Done. Whoever you choose will still be able to call you, but the calls won’t make an announcement.
- As the next move, go to your home screen, swipe down from the top right corner to open the Control Center, and tap on Focus.
- Select your newly created custom focus profile to turn it on and mute those specific callers. With this done, you can easily turn off the focus mode from the Control Center whenever you want to start receiving their audible calls again.
- Open the Phone app, tap on Recents, and select the info icon next to a number as an alternative permanent option.
- Now, scroll down to the bottom of their page and tap on Block this Caller to mute them permanently without Focus.
