Seeing Scattergories everywhere and want to play? We’ve got your back. Follow the guide to know how you can play this game, as we’ll provide the steps and the ways inside. You’ll have fun and can plan a good time with your friends. So, let’s get started.
What is Scattergories?
If you’ve played word games, you’ll have an idea of how Scattergories works. It is basically a high-pressure creative thinking game. It’s a classic party game where you have a task and a limited time to complete it. This is where you race against a 3-minute timer to fill out a list of 12 categories that may include things like “Vegetables,” “Found in a Kitchen,” or “Movie Stars, using only words that start with a specific letter. While the game may sound simple, let’s tell you more. The catch is that you only score points for unique answers. If you and your friend both write “Parrot” for the letter P, nobody gets a point. It rewards weird, obscure, and completely unique thinking and a bit of “creative” arguing over whether an answer counts or not.
Where can I play Scattergories?
Confused about where to play? There’s no limit. Let us still explain some more with examples.
Board Games
You can go old school with this and have your friends over. This will require that you buy the classic board game at major retailers like Walmart or Amazon. If you already have it or can find it around you, that’s a win-win.
Mobile Apps
Things have been simplified by being made so compact as to fit on our mobile screens. There is an official Scattergories app by Magmic, which is available on both iOS and Android, and you can download that. Another popular alternative to this game is the app “Stop – Categories Word Game”, which will give you a good and similar experience in the matter. If you’re on a laptop, sites like ScattergoriesOnline.net or Swellgarfo.com are also great for free. You don’t even have to download the game here.
Go Random!
Since the rules are simple and easy to understand, many people play over FaceTime or in any other way they enjoy it just by using a random letter generator and a piece of paper! That’s so simple, right?
How to play Scattergories?
In Scattergories, the goal of each player is to be the most creative person in the room. The answers decide victory, and their uniqueness matters. Each player gets a list of 12 categories, and a letter is chosen by rolling a 20-sided die. Once the timer starts, you have three minutes to find a word for every category that starts with that very letter. One has to be quick and also smart. The real fun happens when the timer ends, and you read your answers aloud. But if anyone else has the same word, you both get zero, and it doesn’t add up. You only score points for unique answers, so be that!
