How is Bird Flu caused?

Responsible for the deaths of poultry and other kinds of birds, Bird Flu is caused by Type A influenza virus. The most common way this virus spreading among birds is through infected fluids like saliva, excretory matter as well as mucus. It is also highly likely to be caused to other birds by an infected bird if they share the same cage and eat from the same utensils. Bird Flu often results in the death of the infected bird, making it important for the poultry farm owners to be on their guard regarding this.

What are the symptoms of Bird Flu?

If a human being is in some way infected by Bird Flu, there are various symptoms that they will exhibit during their incubation period. These are –

  • Conjunctivitis – A redness in your conjunctiva followed by itchiness and dryness can be the primary symptom of the Avian influenza.
  • Fever – Another sign that indicates that something is wrong inside the body. The body shows symptoms of fever if a person is infected.
  • Fatigue – A constant feeling of tiredness and fatigue overpowers the body.
  • Sore throat and cough – Sore throat and cough are commonly witnessed during Bird Flu.
  • Vomiting and Diarrhea – The stomach is usually upset, making the patient feel nauseous, and even making them throw up at times.  Diarrhea is another symptom.
  • Body ache – If you witness signs of body ache with your muscles being constantly sore, you should see the doctor for Bird Flu, in case it is followed by any secondary symptoms.

While these are the major symptoms of Avian influenza, it can vary among people. Since every body is different in its own way, the occurrence of symptoms too may sometimes vary.

How to protect yourself from Bird Flu?

Bird Flu can be avoided, if necessary precautions are taken. These more specifically concern the people who are surrounded by poultry or birds of any kind due to their job profile or personal interests. Here is what you can do in order to keep yourself safe from Bird Flu –

Keep your distance from birds and animals

If you see a dead animal or bird lying around you or your house, do not approach it directly. Make sure you use masks and gloves before going close to the creature. Besides being contagious, Avian influenza can also become airborne. Therefore, it is suggested that you maintain a healthy distance from the possible carriers of the virus, living or dead.

Report to the authorities about dead birds

There might be Municipal Authorities or Forest Departments that need to look into this problem. The death of a bird, or birds can be due to Bird Flu. The department officers can check that and take care of the dead creatures from here on. If you are skeptical, it is always better to inform the authorities so that they can help you to the best of their abilities. If you find multiple dead birds, it becomes all the more important to inform the authorities.

Take precautions while cooking poultry products

If you a non-vegetarian and like to eat meat and eggs, you are advised to do so with care. Cooking the egg yolk insufficiently can cause the Avian influenza and sometimes even typhoid. If you are cooking bird meat, make sure you wash it thoroughly. Cook the meat completely, as uncooked meat can even cause digestive problems along with aiding in Avian influenza.

Cover your hands and face when dealing with birds

If you are working in a poultry farm or have a job profile that deals with poultry or other birds, you are recommended to cover your face and hands. Most of the workers of the poultry industry, especially who come into contact with birds are more prone to this influenza. Therefore, using masks and gloves should be mandatory for such jobs, and practiced with strictness.

While these are some precautions that are a must if you want to stay safe from Avial influenza, you can do whatever else you can to keep yourself safe. Since it is contagious, you should also avoid coming into contact with people who are diagnosed with Bird Flu to reduce your chances of catching the same.

Hope this article has been useful in understanding the Avial Influenza or the Bird Flu. Understand the symptoms and seek immediate medical attention if diagnosed. Early treatment can help cure the problem in its initial phase and avoid it getting any worse.
