The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered finally gives players a proper way to change Geralt’s appearance without sacrificing useful equipment. The feature is called Reforge in the game, although most players know it as transmog. It lets you keep the stats, bonuses, and level requirements of your equipped gear while giving it the appearance of another compatible item you have collected.

How Reforge Works
Reforge is a cosmetic system, so it does not improve or weaken your equipment. If Geralt is wearing a powerful armor piece, you can keep that exact item and change only its visual appearance.
For example, you can:
- Keep strong Witcher gear for its stats.
- Give it the appearance of another armor piece.
- Change weapon appearances without replacing the weapons you actually use.
- Build a preferred look while keeping your strongest equipment.
The appearance and the equipment remain separate. A stronger item does not gain the statistics of the item whose appearance you use.
How To Unlock Armor Transmog
To change armor appearances, you need to unlock Yoana, the master armorer at Crow’s Perch in Velen. Her Reforge service becomes available after completing the Master Armorers quest.
To begin the quest:
- Go to Crow’s Perch.
- Speak with Fergus Graem, the local smith.
- Ask about finding a master armorer.
- Complete the Master Armorers questline.
- Return to Yoana and use her Reforge service.
How To Unlock Weapon Transmog
Weapons use a different master craftsman. For swords and other supported weapons, you need Éibhear Hattori in Novigrad.
His service is unlocked by completing Of Swords and Dumplings. You can start this questline by speaking with a suitable weaponsmith or by finding Hattori at his dumpling restaurant in Novigrad.
After completing the quest, visit Hattori and select Reforge. His service is used for weapon appearances, while Yoana handles armor.
How To Transmog Your Gear
Once the correct craftsman is unlocked, the actual process is straightforward.
- Equip the armor or weapon you want to keep using.
- Visit Yoana for armor or Hattori for weapons.
- Open the Reforge option.
- Select the equipment you want to change.
- Choose an unlocked appearance from the available options.
- Check the preview and price.
- Confirm the change.
The selected equipment keeps its original stats. Only its appearance changes. You can return later and change the appearance.
The system also respects equipment categories. For example, a chest armor piece can use another compatible chest armor appearance, but you cannot turn trousers into boots or make an armor piece look like a sword.
How Appearance Unlocks Work
Reforge does not simply give you every appearance from the beginning. In the standard system, you generally need to have acquired the relevant equipment or its crafting diagram for that appearance to become available.
This means it is worth keeping track of interesting gear before selling or dismantling it. If you find an armor design you love, make sure its appearance has been registered before getting rid of the item.
Expansion content can also add additional appearances when you own the relevant expansions.
Does Transmog Change Stats?
No. This is the main reason to use Reforge.
Your equipped item’s armor rating, bonuses, effects, and other gameplay properties remain attached to that item. Reforge changes its visual presentation only.
Level requirements also still apply. You cannot use transmog as a way to bypass normal gear progression.
This makes the feature especially useful when a high-level build looks worse than an older set you prefer. You can keep the powerful equipment while restoring the style you actually want.
