Hyundai has pulled the wraps off its Concept Three, an expressive small electric hatchback that previews the upcoming Ioniq 3. Designed primarily with European buyers in mind, this new EV blends retro-futuristic style with practical proportions and could become a serious contender in the small EV segment. And while it’s officially Europe-bound, enthusiasts in the U.S. are already hoping Hyundai reconsiders.
Compact on the Outside, Spacious on the Inside
The Concept Three sits in what Hyundai describes as the B-segment, but its packaging makes it feel closer to a C-segment car. Measuring 168.7 inches long, 76.4 inches wide, and 56.2 inches tall, it’s similar in length to a Toyota GR Corolla hatchback yet wider and lower-slung. The big difference comes in the wheelbase: at 107.2 inches, it’s more than three inches longer than the Toyota, which should pay dividends in interior space.
The concept version flaunts rear-hinged “suicide” doors and no visible B-pillar, a classic show-car flourish unlikely to survive production. Expect the road-going Ioniq 3 to feature a more conventional four-door setup, but the core proportions—compact yet roomy—should remain intact.
Styling: Pixelated Meets Playful
Visually, the Concept Three borrows cues from Hyundai’s design playbook while adding a youthful twist. Think Ioniq 5’s sharp, pixelated surfaces blended with the plump, muscular stance of the Genesis GV60. Finished in matte Tungsten Gray with accents of Moonbeam Yellow inside, the car strikes a daring balance between edgy and approachable.
Highlights include a transparent yellow active spoiler, possibly production-ready and illuminated “IONIQ” branding across the tailgate. The greenhouse glass also features a yellow tint on the concept, though this is less likely to make it to showrooms.
A Cabin Out of Science Fiction
Inside, Hyundai leans heavily on retro-futurism. Grooved floors and door panels create texture, while headrests shaped like floating cushions evoke 1960s sci-fi movies. Instead of traditional screens, cube-shaped displays show symbols and lights that pulse with orange hues, straight out of classic Star Trek.
The playful side of the Three is emphasized with “Thrillseeker” stitched into the passenger seatback and “Troublemaker” on the driver’s side. Even the roof-mounted shark-fin antenna carries a cheeky ghost motif, which also reappears as an animated mascot on a circular dashboard screen. Baseball stitching along the window sills and center console provides an unexpected touch of luxury.
Powertrain Potential
Hyundai hasn’t confirmed exact specifications, but hints suggest the Ioniq 3 could share its drivetrain with the base Ioniq 5. That would mean a 225-hp electric motor paired with a 63-kWh battery pack, good for an estimated 275 miles of range. For a small hatchback, that’s impressive and would put it ahead of many current compact EV rivals.
Of course, the bigger question on fans’ minds is whether Hyundai will build a performance-oriented Ioniq 3 N. If the company decides to go down that path, enthusiasts are already hoping for power figures north of 500 horsepower—a proper hot hatch for the EV age.
When to Expect It
Hyundai executives confirmed that the production version of the Ioniq 3 will arrive in about a year. Europe will get first dibs, but pressure is already mounting for a U.S. release. With its bold styling, clever packaging, and strong potential performance, the Ioniq 3 could be the small EV that injects real personality into the market.
For now, the Concept Three is a promise of what’s to come, and judging by first impressions, it’s one worth getting excited about.
