In a major boost to AI in India, the government has approved funding of Rs 990 crore for the establishment of three AI Centres of Excellence (CoEs). These centers will focus on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities, with the aim of driving innovation and research in these critical sectors. In a significant move to boost technological advancement, the government will establish three AI Centres of Excellence to drive research in critical sectors.

Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, announced this initiative, emphasizing its significance in positioning India as a global leader in AI-driven solutions. The CoEs will be set up in New Delhi and will involve leading academic institutions working closely with industry stakeholders and startups.

AI CoEs in Key Sectors

The initiative will be implemented over five years, from the fiscal year 2023-24 to 2027-28. The CoEs will focus on interdisciplinary research and developing AI applications that are scalable across various sectors:

  •  Healthcare CoE

Led by AIIMS and IIT Delhi, this centre will focus on using AI to improve medical diagnostics, treatment plans, and healthcare delivery.

  • Agriculture CoE

IIT Ropar will head this center, aiming to enhance precision farming, crop monitoring, and resource management through AI technology.

  • Sustainable Cities CoE

IIT Kanpur will manage this CoE, focusing on smart city technologies, urban planning, and environmental sustainability.

Vision for ‘Viksit Bharat’

With a total investment of Rs 990 crore, the government will establish three AI Centres of Excellence to support the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision. This AI initiative is part of the government’s broader ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) vision, aimed at leveraging AI for public welfare. The programme will encourage collaboration between academic institutions, startups, and industry leaders to develop practical AI-driven solutions.

The CoEs will not only focus on academic research but also work closely with startups and industry veterans. An apex committee, co-chaired by Dr. Sridhar Vembu, will guide the execution of this initiative. The committee will ensure the CoEs make meaningful contributions to national goals and enhance India’s global standing in AI.

Job Creation and Start-Up Growth

Minister Pradhan highlighted the transformative potential of these AI centres in creating new jobs and supporting the startup ecosystem. The government will establish three AI Centres of Excellence, which are expected to create job opportunities and contribute to the startup ecosystem. The centres are expected to nurture innovators and researchers, contributing to sustainable economic growth and development.

The establishment of these centres represents a significant step toward strengthening India’s AI capabilities. By focusing on interdisciplinary research, the AI CoEs will bridge the gap between academic research and real-world applications. The project also aims to build high-quality human resources capable of driving AI advancements in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and urban sustainability.

Supporting Global AI Goals

The government’s investment in AI CoEs reflects its commitment to harnessing AI for national progress. These centres are expected to develop scalable AI solutions that address India’s unique challenges and contribute to the global AI ecosystem. Through this initiative, India is poised to become a global hub for AI research and innovation.

As the initiative unfolds, the AI CoEs will contribute not only to India’s growth but also to global public welfare. The government’s emphasis on interdisciplinary research and industry collaboration will play a crucial role in shaping global AI policies and addressing worldwide challenges.

The initiative is expected to have a lasting impact on India’s development and contribute to the broader goal of making AI work for India and the world. However, despite these promising prospects, the initiative faces several challenges that could hinder its effectiveness. One primary concern is the sustainability of funding and resources. While the initial investment of Rs 990 crore is substantial, it is crucial to ensure ongoing financial support and infrastructure for these centres beyond the five-year plan. Without sustained investment, the momentum generated by these CoEs could diminish over time.
