In a major boost to AI in India, the government has approved funding of Rs 990 crore for the establishment of three AI Centres of Excellence (CoEs). These centers will focus on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities, with the aim of driving innovation and research in these critical sectors. Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, announced this initiative, emphasizing its significance in positioning India as a global leader in AI-driven solutions. The CoEs will be set up in New Delhi and will involve leading academic institutions working closely with industry stakeholders and startups.
AI CoEs in Key Sectors
The initiative will be implemented over five years, from the fiscal year 2023-24 to 2027-28. The CoEs will focus on interdisciplinary research and developing AI applications that are scalable across various sectors:

Led by AIIMS and IIT Delhi, this centre will focus on using AI to improve medical diagnostics, treatment plans, and healthcare delivery.

IIT Ropar will head this center, aiming to enhance precision farming, crop monitoring, and resource management through AI technology.

Sustainable Cities CoE
IIT Kanpur will manage this CoE, focusing on smart city technologies, urban planning, and environmental sustainability.
Vision for ‘Viksit Bharat’
With a total investment of Rs 990 crore, the government will establish three AI Centres of Excellence to support the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision. This AI initiative is part of the government’s broader ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) vision, aimed at leveraging AI for public welfare.
