Infiniti appears ready to push its flagship SUV into new territory. The luxury brand is reportedly preparing two high-performance versions of the QX80, bringing serious horsepower and a sportier personality to a model traditionally known for comfort and luxury.
According to a report from Automotive News, Infiniti will introduce these models in phases. The first step will be a revived Red Sport variant expected to arrive in showrooms next spring, followed by an even more extreme performance model later in the decade.
If the plans materialize, the QX80 will become one of the most powerful full-size luxury SUVs in its class.
QX80 Red Sport Expected Next Year
The first performance upgrade will come in the form of the QX80 Red Sport, a badge previously used on Infiniti’s performance-focused models.
This version is expected to produce around 600 horsepower, significantly raising the performance ceiling of the large luxury SUV. While it won’t be the most aggressive version Infiniti plans, it will add a noticeable performance edge.
According to Brian Maragno, Infiniti’s director of product marketing, the Red Sport variant will introduce “an additional level of performance” to the QX80 lineup without pushing the platform to its absolute limits.
The Red Sport model will likely feature several upgrades designed to support its added power. These are expected to include larger brakes, distinctive red brake calipers, and red “S” performance badging. Reports also suggest the SUV could ride on large 24-inch wheels, giving it a more commanding and sporty stance.
Infiniti is expected to offer the Red Sport version alongside the QX80’s Sport and Autograph trims.
A More Extreme Performance Model in 2028
For buyers seeking the ultimate performance QX80, Infiniti reportedly has something even more dramatic in the works.
A second high-performance variant inspired by the QX80 Track Spec concept is expected to arrive around 2028. This version could deliver as much as 680 horsepower, placing it firmly among the most powerful luxury SUVs available.
Beyond the added power, the Track Spec-inspired model is expected to receive several performance-focused upgrades. These could include a more aggressive exterior design with wider fenders, a specially tuned suspension setup, and an active exhaust system designed to emphasize its performance character.
The result would be a flagship SUV that blends luxury, size, and super-SUV levels of performance.
Limited Production Expected
Neither performance model is expected to be produced in large numbers. According to the report, Infiniti is targeting annual sales of roughly 600 units for the QX80 Red Sport.
The more extreme Track Spec-inspired model will likely be even rarer, though exact production figures have not been revealed.
This limited availability suggests Infiniti may position these variants as halo models designed to boost the brand’s performance credentials rather than drive high sales volumes.
Infiniti Keeps Future Plans Under Wraps
When asked about the reported plans, an Infiniti representative declined to confirm the details. However, the company acknowledged that it continues exploring ways to expand its lineup and deliver new capabilities to customers.
For now, Infiniti says its priority remains delivering a flagship SUV that combines luxury, advanced technology, and strong performance.
If the reported performance variants arrive as expected, the QX80 could soon offer a far more thrilling driving experience than ever before.
