As Apple rolls out iOS 26, users are beginning to see hints of the long-promised, deeply contextual, AI-powered future that was teased with the announcement of Apple Intelligence and an upgraded Siri. While the full overhaul of Siri has yet to arrive, the operating system’s updated screenshot system may be the most tangible preview yet of Apple’s ambitions.

When Apple first introduced Visual Intelligence, it was primarily a camera-based tool. You could point your iPhone at objects or landmarks and receive search results or ask questions via integrations like ChatGPT. It was Apple’s version of visual lookup, made smarter with generative AI.

Now, with iOS 26, Apple is expanding the functionality of Visual Intelligence beyond the camera and into screenshots a move that feels both practical and revealing. Instead of requiring users to invoke Siri or navigate to a separate AI assistant, Apple is embedding contextual actions directly into the content capture process many users already rely on.

Screenshots: The New Gateway to Apple Intelligence

In iOS 26, taking a screenshot—by pressing the power and volume down buttons does more than just save an image. On devices that support Apple Intelligence, a new interface immediately opens, showing the screenshot in near full-screen view. Around the image are options to edit, share, or save, and critically, Apple Intelligence-powered actions now appear at the bottom of the screen.

Users also get two small buttons in the corners: one to ask ChatGPT, and another to run a Google Image Search. These integrations make it clear that Apple isn’t pretending its tools are the only solution it’s offering users a choice in how they want to engage with visual content.

This updated experience mirrors what Apple previously promised for Siri: “onscreen awareness” the ability for the assistant to understand what’s happening on your screen and act accordingly. But instead of Siri taking the lead, it’s Visual Intelligence doing the work, embedded in a user flow most people are already familiar with.

What can Apple Intelligence do with a screenshot? Quite a bit, apparently.

Depending on what’s captured in the image, iOS 26 can suggest actions like:

  • Buying a similar product (e.g., spotting a shirt and showing retailers)
  • Identifying plants, food, or animals
  • Creating a calendar event from a flyer or message
  • Adding addresses or names to contacts

Users can also highlight specific parts of the image similar to selecting objects for editing in the Photos app to get tailored insights on just that section. This level of interaction is intuitive, visual, and doesn’t rely on voice commands, which could appeal to users who find digital assistants awkward or unreliable.

Third-Party Integration Expands Possibilities

One of the most notable elements of the new Visual Intelligence interface is support for App Intents from third-party apps. Companies like Google, Etsy, and Pinterest have already integrated, allowing users to take immediate action from their screenshots.

Imagine spotting a unique home decor item in a social post, taking a screenshot, and being able to shop for it on Etsy or save it to Pinterest all without leaving the screenshot interface. This functionality underscores Apple’s desire to make screenshots a more interactive and productive starting point, rather than just passive image captures.

Despite the impressive evolution of Visual Intelligence, it’s important to note what this is not. This is not the full Siri rework that Apple teased when it introduced Apple Intelligence. That version of Siri was supposed to be deeply embedded across the OS, capable of interacting with multiple apps and understanding complex, cross-app commands.

For instance, users were promised the ability to say things like, “Send the photos from our trip last weekend to Mom,” or “Open the article I saved in Safari yesterday.” Those use cases still appear to be missing in action, with Apple Senior VP Craig Federighi admitting at WWDC 2025 that more news on Siri may come later this year.

In the meantime, Apple seems to be testing the waters with more grounded, visual, and tactile ways of bringing Apple Intelligence into everyday use. Screenshots offer a perfect proving ground—they’re commonly used, context-rich, and don’t require real-time voice interaction.

While these changes are mostly positive, not every user will embrace them. For those who simply take screenshots to save receipts, confirm payments, or record simple info, the new interface could feel like an annoying extra step.

Fortunately, Apple appears to be offering the ability to disable this enhanced interface, reverting to the classic system of thumbnail previews and immediate saving to Photos. That balance of innovation and user control will likely be key to adoption.

iOS 26’s new screenshot-based Visual Intelligence feels like a strategic stepping stone. It introduces users to the promise of onscreen context and AI-driven suggestions without overhauling how they interact with their iPhones. It’s Apple’s way of gently easing users into the future while continuing to develop the broader capabilities of Siri behind the scenes.

If this is what Apple can achieve with a screenshot, the eventual Siri upgrade could be worth the wait.
