With Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 17 series expected to be unveiled this week, a significant leak has emerged from a Chinese regulatory database, shedding light on a critical component: the battery capacities. The data, shared by the reputable leaker ShrimpApplePro on X, reveals not only the capacities for each new model but also a surprising detail that differentiates them based on region. For the first time, it appears some iPhone 17 models will feature different battery sizes depending on whether they include a physical SIM card tray or are eSIM-only. The leaks point to some of the most substantial battery life improvements in years, particularly for the Pro models.

The most compelling part of this leak is the breakdown of the new battery sizes. The data shows clear variations across the entire lineup, with the Pro models receiving the most significant boosts.

The standard iPhone 17 is listed with a 3,692 mAh battery, representing a modest but welcome 3.7% increase over its predecessor, the iPhone 16. The new, ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air will have a capacity of either 3,036 mAh or 3,149 mAh, depending on the variant. Stepping up to the professional tier, the iPhone 17 Pro appears to have capacities of 3,988 mAh with a SIM tray and a much larger 4,252 mAh for the eSIM-only version. Lastly, the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max is set to break a major milestone, with a 4,823 mAh battery in its SIM tray variant and a colossal 5,088 mAh capacity in its eSIM-only configuration.

To put these numbers in perspective, we can compare them to the iPhone 16 lineup’s capacities:

  • iPhone 16: 3,561 mAh
  • iPhone 16 Plus: 4,674 mAh
  • iPhone 16 Pro: 3,582 mAh
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: 4,685 mAh

A Tale of Two Batteries: The eSIM Advantage

The most intriguing detail from the regulatory database is the existence of two distinct battery sizes for the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and 17 Air. This is a first for Apple and a direct consequence of its strategy to move away from physical SIM cards. For years, the U.S. has been an eSIM-only market for iPhones, but Apple simply replaced the internal space of the physical tray with a piece of plastic. This leak suggests Apple has now re-engineered the internal space to fill the void left by the SIM tray with a larger battery cell.

This change not only optimizes internal space but also provides a tangible benefit to consumers in regions where eSIM adoption is more common. The move to a larger battery in the eSIM-only models could be a major selling point for power users, offering extended longevity between charges. While some countries may continue to receive the SIM tray models due to regulatory requirements or limited eSIM infrastructure, it’s clear Apple is pushing toward a fully wireless future.

The Pro Lineup’s Significant Power Boost

For users of Apple’s most powerful devices, the battery capacity increases are particularly exciting. The leaked numbers suggest that the standard iPhone 17 Pro will see a substantial 18.7% increase in capacity in its eSIM-only variant, jumping from 3,582 mAh to a whopping 4,252 mAh. This is a game-changing improvement that should translate to a full day of heavy use for most users.

Similarly, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is poised to become the first iPhone to ever cross the 5,000 mAh mark, reaching a staggering 5,088 mAh in its eSIM-only configuration. This roughly 8% year-over-year increase should ensure the Pro Max remains a battery-life champion. Both of these gains seem to corroborate earlier rumors of a major focus on battery longevity for Apple’s high-end devices.

The iPhone 17 Air: A Compromise for Design

The leaked capacities for the new iPhone 17 Air reveal what appears to be a notable trade-off between design and power. At around 3,000 mAh, its battery is the smallest in the lineup, reflecting the device’s rumored ultra-thin design. The SIM-tray version clocks in at just 3,036 mAh, while the eSIM-only model gains a minor bump to 3,149 mAh.

While this capacity might seem low for a modern smartphone, the device is expected to benefit from other power-saving features. It is rumored to feature Apple’s new, more power-efficient C1 modem for cellular connectivity, which could help extend its runtime. Additionally, whispers of a dedicated iPhone 17 Air battery case suggest Apple may have anticipated this limitation and is prepared to offer a solution for users who need more power.

While this information is based on leaks and should be treated with a healthy dose of skepticism, the data appears robust. MacRumors has independently verified the presence of these listings in the regulatory database, adding credibility to the findings. With the European Union now mandating energy labels on iPhone product pages, we may soon see official confirmation of these capacities.

The move to an eSIM-only battery advantage is a strong signal from Apple about the future of its hardware. By offering more battery life in its most modern form, it incentivizes users to embrace the digital SIM. The overall trend across the lineup, especially the significant gains for the Pro and Pro Max, confirms that Apple is prioritizing battery longevity to meet the growing demands of its most powerful devices.
