The tension in the region is escalating rapidly. The IRGC of Iran has threatened massive AI data center construction in Abu Dhabi. The threat comes amid rumours of the US launching attacks on the Iranian energy system infrastructure.

This came in a video message made by the spokesman at Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters. In the message, the Stargate AI campus is mentioned as a target that may be attacked by Iran. The site has been characterized as a valuable target because of its links to technology from the West.

It is a new twist in the tension in the region. AI centers and data centers join oilfields and military facilities as potential targets.

Stargate is one of the biggest AI projects in the world. It will cover an area measuring 19.2 square kilometers. This is more than nine times the size of Monaco.

The investment cost of the AI project will surpass $30 billion. In the far future, the aim is to achieve a computing power of 5 gigawatts. This is achieved through clusters of 1 gigawatt each with an initial start-up of 200 megawatts slated for 2026.

The Rise of Sovereign AI and the New Frontier of Global Infrastructure

In terms of scale, Stargate belongs to an entirely new category. This supercomputer facility is intended to train and deploy state-of-the-art AI models on a national and global scale.

Stargate project is sponsored and managed by G42 company, an Abu Dhabi-based firm with a subsidiary called Khazna Data Centres. It represents a broader trend of making the UAE one of the world’s AI hubs.

The partnership includes several leading technology and financial organizations from all over the world. OpenAI and Oracle companies will provide management of large-scale AI workloads and cloud services.

Nvidia is expected to deliver cutting-edge AI chips (the latest Grace Blackwell series). Cisco will handle network connectivity and security, using zero-trust architecture for its operation.

Finally, SoftBank can help with financing and scaling the infrastructure. All of the above-mentioned organizations show that Stargate is a truly international project and therefore can be targeted due to geopolitical tensions between states.

However, it also represents a broader shift in the attitude towards AI infrastructure worldwide. In the past, power plants and ports were key infrastructure assets. Now, huge data centers perform those functions. They fuel digital economies, militaries, and research.

The project called Stargate is important not just economically. It helps create “sovereign AI.” It enables nations to create their own artificial intelligence without dependence on any other country.

The UAE has already created models like Jais for such purposes. The Stargate project will help the UAE scale this capacity up.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) announcement comes against a backdrop of threats from America. Former US President Donald Trump warned that America could bomb Iran’s power plants in case of conflict.

AI Infrastructure as the New Geopolitical Battleground

Iran has responded with its own threats to its opponents. In targeting such a vital AI facility, it shows that it can retaliate by attacking non-military but economic and technologically strategic infrastructure.

This marks an escalation in the tensions between these nations. It turns their dispute into one about national assets. The UAE has portrayed itself as a safe base for business. Projects like Stargate play a part in establishing this image.

A direct threat to such a site raises concerns. Investors may start to factor in geopolitical risk. Companies may review security plans for data centers in the region.

There is also the question of physical security. Large campuses like Stargate are hard to protect fully. They cover vast areas and rely on constant power and connectivity.

On the other hand, any assault will have worldwide implications, as disruption of such a facility will impact cloud computing, AI research, and information exchanges well outside the geographic region.

Construction of the initial project is proceeding quickly. The deadline for completion of this first phase is set for the third quarter of 2026. There have been no indications of delays at this point.

However, things remain up in the air. Everything will depend on how US-Iran relations develop over the next few months.

Should words turn into actions, ventures such as Stargate could come under threat. Should tensions cool, then the emphasis could revert back to expansion and implementation.

For now, the message is unequivocal. AI infrastructure is no longer solely about technology. Rather, it has become pivotal to world politics, economics, and security concerns.
