Kia has officially unveiled the production version of its PV5 electric van, a year after debuting the concept at CES 2024. The zero-emission workhorse arrives with minimal design changes, retaining its futuristic appeal while adding practical enhancements for durability and usability. Available in both Passenger and Cargo variants, the PV5 is a bold entry into the electric van segment, competing directly with the Volkswagen.

Futuristic Yet Functional Design

The production PV5 stays true to the concept’s striking appearance but gains subtle refinements to enhance real-world functionality. The vehicle’s high-mounted, angular LED daytime running lights, which double as turn signals, create a modern and distinctive look. Below them, the main headlights flank a large central charging port cap on the front bumper, emphasizing the van’s EV identity. Additionally, the PV5 sports chunky side mirrors for improved visibility and black plastic body cladding for a rugged aesthetic.

A closer look at the Cargo and Passenger models reveals practical differences. The Cargo version features twin side-opening tailgate doors to ease loading and unloading, while the Passenger model adopts a traditional lift-up tailgate. Kia has also integrated a front-facing camera below the company logo and a large radar sensor beneath the license plate, likely for advanced driver assistance systems.

Interior and Features

While Kia has not yet released official interior images, some details have surfaced. The PV5 features separate screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, ensuring a tech-forward cockpit. The presence of sturdy grab handles in the A-pillars across both models suggests a utilitarian approach, emphasizing ease of entry and exit. The Passenger version also boasts a generous greenhouse, promising excellent visibility and a spacious cabin feel.

Kia is expected to introduce additional derivatives of the PV5, including specialized conversions tailored to various business and personal needs. This flexibility underscores the brand’s ambition to establish the PV5 as a versatile mobility solution rather than just another electric van.

Dedicated EV Platform and Future Expansion

Unlike Kia’s existing vans, such as the Carnival, the PV5 is not based on a repurposed combustion-engine platform. Instead, it has been developed from the ground up as an electric vehicle, aligning with Kia’s broader “Platform Beyond Vehicle” (PBV) strategy. This dedicated EV architecture allows for optimal space utilization, improved efficiency, and seamless integration of modern electric drivetrains.

The PV5 is just the beginning. Kia has hinted at a growing PBV family that could include an electric pickup truck, as evidenced by a concept showcased at CES 2024. This expansion signals the brand’s commitment to electrifying commercial and utility vehicles, catering to a wide range of industries and consumer preferences.

Launch and Technical Details

Kia has scheduled the official reveal of the PV5 for February 24 at the 2025 Kia EV Day in Tarragona, Spain. While the initial unveiling will focus on design and features, complete technical specifications, including range, battery options, and powertrain details, will be released three days later.

With its bold styling, practical enhancements, and dedicated EV platform, the PV5 is poised to make a strong impact in the growing electric van market. As Kia continues its push toward sustainable mobility, the PV5 represents a significant step in redefining commercial and passenger transportation for the electric age.
