India’s JSW Energy and South Korea’s LG Energy Solution (LGES) are preparing for a revolutionary partnership to produce batteries for renewable energy storage and electric cars (EVs). With an expenditure of more than $1.5 billion, the ambitious joint venture seeks to establish a cutting-edge manufacturing facility in India.

A Powerhouse Collaboration

It is intended for the joint venture to be a 50:50 partnership. JSW Energy contributes substantial capital investment, while LGES will supply the state-of-the-art machinery and technology. Together, they intend to build a battery production plant capable of producing 10 gigawatt hours (GWh).

LGES will use the remaining 30% for its own customers and activities in India, while JSW is anticipated to use 70% of the production for its EV and energy storage projects.

For LGES, a world leader in battery supply to major players in the market like Tesla, General Motors, and Hyundai, this collaboration is a calculated move. The joint venture enables LGES to diversify its risk portfolio and increase its manufacturing footprint in India, where the EV sector is still in its infancy.

India’s Growing EV Market Beckons

India’s EV market is expanding quickly thanks to government rules and incentives for clean energy manufacture, even if it is still in its infancy when compared to the world’s leading markets. To encourage investments in green technologies, such as electric vehicles and renewable energy sources, the Indian government has offered billions of dollars in tax breaks and subsidies.

JSW Energy’s ambitions align perfectly with these developments. The company, led by billionaire chairman Sajjan Jindal, has been vocal about its desire to become a major player in the EV market, starting with electric buses and trucks, and eventually expanding into passenger cars.

By securing a reliable, local supply of high-performance batteries, JSW aims to reduce production costs and ensure competitive pricing for its EV offerings.

A Win-Win Opportunity

For JSW Energy, this venture is not just about manufacturing batteries. The company is positioning itself as a key player in India’s clean energy and mobility revolution. Having already formed a joint venture with China’s SAIC Motor to boost MG Motor’s India operations, JSW is taking strategic steps to establish a vertically integrated EV ecosystem.

For LGES, the collaboration represents a calculated entry into the Indian market. The company already supplies batteries to leading e-scooter makers like Ola Electric and TVS Motor but lacked a manufacturing base in the region. The joint venture with JSW allows LGES to leverage India’s burgeoning EV and energy storage markets while lowering its exposure to global market slowdowns.

Proposed Plant and Timeline

The companies are exploring sites for the manufacturing plant, with the goal of beginning operations before the end of 2026. A long-term 25-year agreement has reportedly been proposed to ensure stability and shared vision.

The proposed facility will cater to India’s unique energy needs while meeting global standards for quality and efficiency. The final decision on the partnership is expected within the next 3-4 months.

A Boost for India’s Clean Energy Vision

If this alliance is successful, it will be a significant milestone in India’s shift to a greener future. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively promoting domestic manufacturing of EVs and related components in an effort to reduce reliance on imports and enhance the country’s energy security.

In India, Tata Motors and MG Motor control the majority of the vehicle business, whereas Ola, TVS, and Bajaj Auto are the leading producers of e-scooters. A local battery production hub will boost auxiliary businesses and create jobs while also accelerating the adoption of EVs.

Conclusion

An important turning point for India’s EV and renewable energy industries is marked by the LGES-JSW Energy joint venture. This collaboration has the potential to make India a significant participant in sustainable energy technologies by fusing local vision with international experience.

Policymakers, customers, and industry stakeholders are all keeping a close eye on the partnership as both businesses complete the details. If everything goes according to plan, the cooperation will benefit the businesses and the country for years to come.
