Imagine a world where you purchase a computer mouse and use it throughout your entire life without ever getting a new one. It probably sounds like a fairy tale of some technology firm, isn’t it? Well, Logitech new CEO Hanneke Faber mentioned recently that this dream could become reality. In a conversation with Nilay Patel on The Verge’s Decoder podcast, Faber shared that at Logitech, they had envisioned developing a ‘forever mouse’ whose software could be updated to the point of eternal functionality.
The Idea of the ‘Forever Mouse’
One could think of this forever mouse as a watch that consistently accompanies one throughout their existence. You do not dispose off a good watch, you retain it and perhaps pass it on to your children or other next of kin. Likewise, arguing that a high-quality, well-designed mouse should never end up in a trash bin, Faber’s view is in this regard as well. However, it is not only about the durability; it is about a mouse that is updated through software like smartphones that get updates that make them fresh and functional.
A Mouse That Will Last Forever
Well now you are probably asking to yourself what is so special about this mouse? As per Faber the mouse is going to be heavier than the regular mouse. This added weight might be a small price to pay for a gadget that was calculated to go the distance beyond the normal usage. But this – this is where it gets interesting – the existence of the forever mouse is in its software.
With frequent releases of updates, Logitech makes it its business to ensure maximum performance of this mouse. This approach isn’t completely unique; we’ve become accustomed to seeing it in other devices like smartphones and smartwatches. However, how do you accurately apply this to a mouse? That’s a new twist!
The Subscription Model
As a plan to sustain this ever-lasting mouse, Logitech could be thinking of going for a subscription one. Picture this: unlike owning a mouse and incurring a large expense all at once, you pay a smaller amount frequently to ensure that your mouse is properly used and maintained.
But let there be a little setback. It may not prove easy to persuade people to subscribe to software for their mouse. But, who likes an additional subscription in their daily lives? But Faber seems optimistic.Â
The Price Tag and the Target Market
From the cash value perspective, it is possible that a forever mouse would be more expensive in the initial stages. Accordingly, Faber estimated that such a mouse would likely be within the $200 price range. I mean, that is quite a jump from the baseline price of a $26 mouse. However, suppose one considers that this may be a worthy investment – for professionals or any tech-savvy individual. It is not just about the mouse hardware it is about the potential of having better mouse features over a period of time.
Addressing Durability
Faber himself didn’t describe the strength features of the mouse in details but let’s imagine something. Indeed a forever mouse should perhaps have characteristics that allow for ease of repair and or upgrade. Logitech already offers components for some of its products through iFixit, an organization committed to do-it-yourself repairs. This held the promise of adding more parts and guides and really changing the game.
Think about it, a mouse that has configurable buttons, replaceable mouse shells, and cables that can be connected/disconnected. Specificity might be the issue – this would mean that the users will be able to fine-tune the mouse to their requirements.
The Environmental Impact
Another of Logitech’s long-term objectives, in fact, is to halve its emissions by 2031. A forever mouse perfectly aligns with this strategy. In this way, Logitech could drastically decrease the amount of unnecessary e-waste produced through the creation of their long-lasting mice. This is a good move for the company and the needs of the planet.
